The Guard

It has been too long.

I sit down at the kitchen table, just like I had all those nights ago. Waiting. My phone sits in front of me, ringer on, next to a cold plate of spaghetti. I don't know what went wrong. Keeping my eyes on the device, I mentally hold my breath, ready for a call at any minute.

Hopefully from Undyne, saying that she had found Sans. And that there is a perfect explanation for why he has been missing for...so many days. It definitely hasn't been easy since he went missing.

"Undyne, he hasn't come back. He has been gone all night." I explain, watching the snow fall out the window in the darkness of the night. "Papyrus, I'm sure he's fine. He probably just stayed too late at Grilby's and stayed overnight." She suggests in her confident demeanor.

"Yes, but wouldn't he be back by now? He even left his phone." I rant. "Should I try calling Grilby?" I suggest, my anxiousness leaking into my voice. "Pap, it's 3 in the morning. I'm sure he wouldn't want dozens of voicemails to wake up to." She jokes lightly.

I feel a little guilty for dumping my worries on her so late. If anything I probably am overreacting. "You're probably right, Undyne." I speak slowly. More thoughts of what could have happened to Sans pop up.

"But what if it was a human." I suggest, with a hint of fear in my voice. That suggestion let's Undyne know how much I am worried by Sans absence. And because of that she knows exactly what to say. "There hasn't been a human down here in ages." She says a little more softly, trying not to get me to worry any more than I am.

"Even if there is the slightest chance of a human falling, Sans wouldn't want to go fight them, even if it's his job." She jokes tiredly at the end. I nod, holding the phone to my ear. She's right. I'm sure he's fine. "Thanks Undyne." I say, gratitude evident in my voice. "No problem, bonehead." She laughs. "Now, go get some sleep, I bet your bro will be back when you get up." She says, sending her goodbyes.

Hanging up the phone was my first mistake. I woke up, and he wasn't there. I had even decided to stay home throughout the day, he never did come back. I called Grilby he said he didn't see him. I called everyone and they said they didn't see him.

Now after so many days, I have decided to pick up more hours of sentry duty. Taking my time to look around the Underground for my brother. And even now, Undyne has her own group of people searching for him.

I just don't know what could have drove him into leaving. There isn't any reason for him to want to just run away like that, right? I take in a deep sigh, and rest my arms on the table. And instead of picking up the fork to eat the cold spaghetti, I check my text messages.
