The Guard

"Stop human!" I announce, mustering up all the confidence I have at the moment. Trying to mask my concern...and fear. There is a human. Could they have been the ones to take my brother? I plaster on a serious smile and stop my hands from shaking, by gesturing a hand in front of me. A spoken signal to stop, but a silent sign that I would attack if I had to.

And I don't want to fight right now.

They decide to not respond, but obey. Which I can tell from Undyne, she is happy about that. "You have just met the Royal Guard of the Underground. Surrender now, or face the consequences!" Undyne says bravely, pointing her finger at the human. Her entire focus is on the human, posture and mind. I turn my head to face her, hoping to get direction for what to do next. But all I see are her eyes, dead set on the human's every move.

They don't seem that big for a human, but of course I haven't seen one before. Their hair is dark and choppy, their expression set as stone. They didn't seem scared of us, or welcoming. They almost look, blank. Void of expression, or at least they mask their feelings well.

The blue and pink striped sweater billows around them as the wind picks up. I try to subtly bury the lower half of my face in my scarlet scarf, hoping that the human doesn't notice that I'm cold. No need to appear any less ready, for Undyne is prepared for any attack.

And soon the shorts that the human is wearing is more apparent. How could they stand this cold in clothes like that? Do humans have a stronger temperament to the weather? Was weather much worse behind the barrier?

I mentally snap myself out of my thoughts as the human walks forward. Without speaking of surrendering. They could have given up or they could be coming towards us to fight. "Human, have you decided to surrender?" Undyne asks, her power standing behind all of her words.

The wind picks up again, and as they come closer I notice something. Something hidden in the long sleeve of their sweater and the frigid air blows by. As they take a slow step onto the bridge I can see the weapon. And without missing a beat I whisper to Undyne. "I think they have a knife." I don't let my eyes fall off of them and what they are carrying. And all I can think of is why they would have a knife?

And where would they have gotten it?

"Just, be ready for anything." She says, her confidence holding strong. As the human ones closer, I can almost feel the tension that Undyne is building up. They make their way off the bridge, and I can almost see the dust matted into their clothes.

A dry chill runs down my spine.

But even with the appearance they hold with what now looks like a toy knife, and dust on their clothes. I can still only see someone who is freezing in the cold. Someone who must have been all alone. A human who must have felt the need to defend themselves. "Halt human, if you come any farther, you must face our attack."

We don't need to attack. And they don't need to fight. "Surrender and we can settle this peacefully." I add, trying to spark hope in this cold situation. Maybe an opportunity to accept mercy will help them. Maybe we can talk this all out. I could ask them about Sans, while Undyne explains how we are trapped here. All over dinner, after the dust is washed off...

But when I offered peace...
