Chapter 16

"Taylor," my dad says looking at me. I feel myself start to shake but I can't chicken out especially since I was ranked 2nd in the first stage. So I sucked it up and pushed myself out of my seat and walked over to the door on trembling legs. Once I reached the door my dad moved out of the way and let me in then closed the door behind us.

"Take a seat," he said motioning for me to sit in the simulation chair.

"Dad I-," I started to say but he cut me off.

"No," he said. Then he whispered, "we'll talk later." I nodded and he continued to program the computer. Once he was done he walked over and leaned me back against the chair.

"I'm going to inject you with a serum that translates fear, and the molecules will help me see what's going on in your mind," he said grabbing the syringe and cleaning the spot on my neck. He stuck the needle in and immediately I began to feel numb and distanced.

"Your gonna be facing your worst fears Tay, so do what ever it is to either calm down or face the fear," he says slipping further away from my conscious the last thing I hear him say is, "Be Brave."

I wake up in the middle of a desert, I stand up and look around, there's no one for miles. Suddenly the ground starts moving and I start to run but I don't get very far before my feet sink into the sand and I'm stuck. I keep trying to get out of the sand but I just keep going deeper. But then I remember 'this isn't real'. And so I stop for a moment letting the sand sallow me and concentrate. How do I get out if this, I'm trying to come up with a plan but the sand just keeps getting higher and higher. Finally it's up to my neck, and I just tell myself, 'this isn't real, I won't die,' so at the last second right before I let the sand sallow me whole I see a post with a rope. But it's too late the sand goes over my head and I fall into darkness.

When I walk up I practically jump out of my chair. I feel like I just died and came back to life. "Hey Tay it's alright it's over," my dad says trying to calm me down. After a minute my breathing slows and I relax. "Well if it makes you feel any better you have the best time so far, you even beat your brother," he says trying to help me cheer up. I nod and just stand up ready to walk out the door when my dad stops me. "Hey meet me at the chasm tonight at midnight, we need to talk," he whispers and then opens the door and I walk out.

He closes the door behind me, I see everyone looking at me but I feel dead and I just walk right through yet waiting room and out into the hall. I glance at the clock it's still early and I'm tired from that simulation so I head to the dorms. When I get there I see the other people that had done there simulations before me, most of them are curled up in balls shaking. Some are in groups talking and a few are sleeping. Then I see Conner in the corner alone and I walk over and sit on his bed next to him.

"Hey," I say.

"Hey," he says. I just put my head on his shoulder and he puts his arm around my waist. After a little bit we end up in his bed falling asleep in each other's arms. Everyone else feel asleep and who cares. I'm about to close my eyes and I feel Conner kiss my forehead, and I would kiss him back but I'm too far into the blackness all I can do is curl up more in his arms and fall asleep.
