7.1 The predominant characteristics of the aphorism are brevity and surplus of meaning. It is the latter which distinguishes it from other short forms of writing such as the witticism and the epigram.
7.2 The aphorist must leave something unsaid, and the unsaid part may be the meaning, or something beyond the meaning of the words that the words, however, serve to indicate.
7.3 The great aphorists would include Lichtenberg, La Rochefoucauld, Pascal, Nietzsche, but not Wilde.
