The monitor flickered on and off and then back on again. There were five of them all mounted on the wall above the small work desk in the large black van. The tall brunette sitting in front of the computer keyboard snarled at the staticy image as he banged his fist against the side of the screen.
"Calm down Philip." The women behind him called, her long red curls hung limply over her shoulders as she scrolled through a list of names on the tablet on her lap.
"The darn thing doesn't work, Wendy! We need new equipment." Philip said.
"We can't afford new equipment." Wendy replied. She stepped forward and sat down next to the male. Leaning forward she wormed her hands around at the back of the monitors to play with the wires connecting the screens. After a few moments the static faded and all five monitores sprang to life. They all showed different angles of the same area. A vacant street in between a busy coffee shop and a small park. In the cafe people sipped idly at their cups while young children played in the fountain in the park. Their movement were stuck in time as the screen showed only a still image.
"You ready?" Philip asked. The red head nodded and he pressed the play button on his keyboard. Immediately the images started to move as the video played forward. The couple watched in silence as chaos overtook the cafe and the water in the park fountain turned a sickly red. Children ran to their parents in terror, their screams silent in the muted video.
"Nothing strands out here." The male said. "There is no one out of the ordinary."
"I would have to agree." The female stated before her eyes caught sight of something in the bottom corner of the screen. Wendy fiddled with the computer controls as the image shifted slightly to the right. In the corner of the screen, just barely out of sight, was a teenage girl with short blonde hair wearing an oversized grey sweater. The girls sleeve was rolled up and she was fiddling with her arm. Philip leaned over Wendy to look at the girl on the monitor before shaking his head.
"Too young." He stated as he returned to his own screen.
"But there's no one else." Wendy debated as she changed the angle and zoomed in on the girl. She pressed play and two watched as the video resumed, the teenage girl standing in the middle of it all.
"Well I'll be damned." Said Philip as he scratched his head and leaned back in his chair. "Is that her?"
"I think so." Wendy answered nervously as she pulled out her tablet and began swiping through images and sources.
"There's a highschool less than a mile east of there." She said showing the image on her tablet to Philip. A two story building surrounded by a tall metal fence stood in the picture.
"Are we going to go there?" He asked hesitantly.
"I think we have to. We have no other leads."
The boy nodded in agreement as he turned off the monitors and climbed out of the car. Wendy took her tablet and followed him as they both climbed into the front seat and drove off.Philip fiddled uncomfortably in the front seat of the car. He knew he wasn't doing anything criminal but still felt like a creep sitting in the shadows by the school gates watching as all these young girls and boys walked by. Wendy sat next to him on her tablet. On one side of the screen she had a still of the girl from the video while on the other side she scrolled through school records and websites. It all appeared to be very private information so the boy could only assume that she had hacked her way in. After a few moments she pulled on his shirt sleeve and showed him the image. It was the profile picture of a girl resembling that of the one in the video. Under the picture there was a bunch of other information such as name, age, and address.
"Akira Lonberg. Age sixteen. Sophomore." Wendy stated.
Philip looked at the image and then back out at the street in front of them.
"This isn't right. SHe's too young." He mumbled.
"Age has always been varied." Wendy replied.
"Not by this much. The youngest we ever met was in her early twenties. This one's still a kid." He groaned to himself as he saw all sorts of future problems heading his way. Just the he looked up and caught sight of the girl in question heading towards them. She was wearing the same grey jacket as the day before as well as whitish jeans and a dark blue shirt. THe girl looked almost lost in her own little world as she fiddled with music on her phone, blastinge her ears while completely unaware that she was being watched.
"Is that her?" Philip asked.
"Looks like it." Wendy answered. "Should we wait till class gets out?"
"I don't want to wait but I don't see much other choice." The brunette grumbled. Just then he caught sight of something that made his hair stand on end.
"Oh no." He moaned. A little ways behind Akira was a group of three girls watching her intently as they followed three steps behind. At first glance they appeared normal but if you looked closely you could see that all three were enveloped by a sickly dark aura.
"We should probably go deal with that." Wendy said as she slipped a handgun from the glove compartment into the belt of her pants.
"I agree." Philip said as they both jumped out of the car and ran around the side of the gate to find a back entrance.
