Virgil lingered in the doorway that led to the kitchen, trying and failing to work up the courage to go inside. He was just too nervous about the other sides that were currently in it to do anything. Even though he was one of them now, he still felt as if he didn't fit in. He knew that he didn't.
He used to be a dark side. He used to be an awful person who tried his best to freak Thomas out. Even though he had changed, there was still no excusing what he had done.
Or what he had been forced to do.
Only Patton--the happy-go-lucky dad figure who happened to represent Thomas's morality--accepted him. Virgil had no idea why Patton was so nice to him. Didn't he remember how terrible Virgil used to be?
The other sides certainly remembered, and they would refuse to let go of what Virgil had done in the past. He didn't blame them, though.
Speaking of Patton, he happened to look up from where he was mixing some ingredients in a bowl, and gave Virgil a friendly smile.
"Oh, hey kiddo! I'm almost done making some cookie dough. Wanna try some?"
Before Virgil could respond, another side butted in. "Oh look, it's Dr. Gloom. Why don't you go rain on someone else's parade?" The one who spoke was Roman, Thomas's creative side.
Virgil breathed a small sigh, turning away from the others. He knew that it had been a mistake to linger for so long. He should've just dealt with his hunger until everyone else was sleeping. Then there would be less chance of having an encounter like this.
"No thanks, Patton. I just remembered that I wasn't hungry anyways." His stomach growled in protest, but he ignored it. He began to walk away, but paused when a soft hand grabbed his.
"Please don't go! Just ignore Roman." Patton tugged Virgil into the kitchen. "He'll be good, I promise! If he isn't, I'll ground him." Virgil reluctantly followed him back in.
"You can't ground me," Roman protested, pouting a little as Virgil came back in. "You're not my father!"
"Well you're my kiddo, and I'm older than you, so there!" Patton stuck his tongue out childishly at the other side, who just rolled his eyes.
He ignored Roman's grumbling, and let go of Virgil's hand as he went right back to mixing the ingredients to make the cookie dough. Once he was satisfied, he took a spoon and dug out a huge glob of it. He then handed it to Virgil.
Virgil looked down at the spoon for a moment, before asking, "Should I be eating this? Cookie dough has eggs in it, right? What if it makes me sick? I know that I can't exactly die from it, but it wouldn't be good if--"
"Stop worrying, kiddo! It's edible cookie dough; it doesn't have eggs. Go ahead, try it!"
Virgil took a deep breath, nodding. He lifted the spoon to his lips, and took a bite of the cookie dough. Almost immediately his eyes lit up as he tasted it. It tasted amazing!
He tried to act nonchalant and uncaring as he said, "It tastes pretty good, I guess." He never allowed his walls to fall, nor did he allow most of his emotions through these walls. Patton had seen his reaction to it, though, and understood that it was better than what Virgil was letting on.
The spoon was snatched out of his hand as Roman made his way over, taking a spoonful for himself. The prince gasped as he tasted it.
"Pretty good? This cookie dough is magnificent! It's the best I've ever tasted!" Roman shot a small glare towards Virgil, who just glared back.
"Aww, thanks! But please don't be mean to Virgil. I know that he thought it was amazing, even if he didn't say it out loud." Patton got out a tupperware bowl to put the rest of the cookie dough in.
"Patton, it's fine," Virgil told the fatherly trait. "I don't really care about what he says or thinks of me." That was a complete lie, but he didn't want him to worry. "Anyways, thanks for the cookie dough. I'm going to head back to my room."
Virgil turned and made his way back to his room, ignoring Patton's protest. He sighed softly as he closed the door, before tensing as he heard a familiar voice. One that he had hoped to forget.
"It took you long enough, brother."
