"I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING!!!" Eliza shrieks at the top of her lungs. In the middle of the field. Where she is about to play her first spring field hockey game of the season. Nice move, Liza. Way to call attention to us.
She jumps up and down, shaking my shoulders. "You are my hero. I wanna be you when I grow up. Can I get an autograph from Northfield's future star player?"
"Oh shut up. You can't predict anything."
"Yes I can, I got that interition." She taps her temples. Facepalm.
"You mean intuition?
"Whatever, you red pen police. But my dream is finally coming true."
"Your dream?"
"Yepp. My dream."
"And what is your dream?"
"To have you and Chase be able to finally have a reason to be together!"
Okay I think she's had a little too much Gatorade.
"Me and Chase? That's ridiculous." I'm trying to keep my voice down, but alas, the whole field hockey team has already heard.
"How can you not be into Chase like that? He's the hottest guy in the freshmen class."
"I heard he's been in love with a mystery girl since preschool."
"I hear all the guys throw your name around all the time. And Chase is always blushing when they do."
"I wish I was in your place."
I can't take this anymore. My life is not a chick flick, but it's sure looking like one. I need to get on the field fast so I can knock some people over. Let off some steam.
And I do just that. There's a football field behind the school where we're playing (conveniently North High) and Ricky's there with a few friends. I really need to catch up with the big bro. I haven't been able to talk to him much since David got home and decided to overstay his welcome (which he is currently still doing even though he's technically moved out).
I make my way over to the field. Ricky's at the far end, throwing the ball to Petey down the field. Vanessa's brother Tommy decided to show up for once, and so did her cousin, Miguel. They all play for the varsity team. As I jog over, Petey looks over and starts sprinting my way. Oh no. Here comes the freight train. He collides with me, throws me over his shoulder, and war cries.
Tommy tackles both him and me, and all of the sudden I'm at the bottom of a pig pile. I love it how they don't go easy on me.
"I knew you'd do it, Toby girl, I knew ya got it in ya, I told ya bro when you was little that you'd be the next big thing and here ya are all footbally and a starter and gosh I'm so proud of ya I take all the credit you obviously learned from the best and-"
"Ya gonna finish that sentence and get off of me?" My voice is muffled by someone's elbow, which was conveniently suffocating me. They all roll off, and Tommy pulls me up and slaps me on the back. "We're all proud of little Toby." He smirks.
I shove him at the "little" comment. I not little. I big. I Toby. And I am talking like a toddler.
I pick up the football at my feet. "Think fast." And I whip it right at the back of Ricky's head. Bullseye.
Well, it would've been a bullseye if he had not turned around last second and caught it perfectly. Stupid skills.
He sticks his tongue out at me. "Loser."
Wow, what a great comeback. But still, nobody calls October McCallister a loser. I sprint after his retreating form, aiming to tackle.
Well, he's pretty fast and I wasn't feeling that great so I might've let him get away. But he's not off the hook. Maybe the pink hair dye will show up in his shampoo bottle tomorrow.
"So, how's it goin' with you and Chasie boy?" Tommy sneaks up right beside me.
"What do you mean, me and Chasie boy?" I mimic his annoying little voice.
"Well, you're the talk of the whole school. Well, the lower grades that is."
"How?"
"What do you mean how? He's loved you forever. Don't tell me you've never noticed."
"I've never noticed."
"Dang you! You don't see anything, do you?"
I frown at this, definitely confused.
"I don't get it."
He sighs. "I don't know, but you have this thing about you that makes people like you, despite the sarcasm and extreme competitiveness. I mean, like like you like you."
"That's a lot of likes."
"See what I mean? You're pretty, can handle tough stuff, isn't a total witch like Sabrina, make people laugh and kick butt all at the same time."
"You're lying."
"And you're so down on yourself. If you can only see what Chase and most guys see, you'd be pleasantly surprised."
I smile at this. Nobody's ever been that sweet to me. Like ever.
"Ya know what, Tommy? You're just awesome." I playfully shove him.
"I know. Who else is gonna tell you that? You're brothers are jerks."
"I heard that!" Ricky pops up from behind.
"Okay, Ricardo. I'm gonna give you to ten. You better start running."
He takes off instantly. Forget ten, I'm gonna get him. I run off to attack him, Tommy at my heels. Cuz who wouldn't want a chance to beat up your probably future brother in law?
