"Stand down!" someone yelled, and an arrow fired straight at us.
Calmly, like people firing at us was definitely a normal, every-day occurrence, Kari shot an arrow back. The two arrows collided in midair. I gaped. (don't judge.) Kari, my nerdy, un-sporty sister, had just shot. an arrow. out. of midair.
Dayum, I have a hecking awesome sibling. Who is probably amazing at acting like a total nerd.
"Calm, Éomer!" Kari called. "It's me, Halbarad! And two werewolves!"
The unimpressed face of a girl with a beautiful blond braid of hair popped out from behind a rock. "You could've warned me, Hal." she muttered.
Kari shrugged. "I got troubled along the way."
Éomer nodded, and I got the distinct feeling I had seen her somewhere before. Where had I seen her?? I couldn't figure it out.
"Aragorn was getting worried, you'd better come inside with these new people." Éomer waved a hand at our party, and we all followed her into the largest of the tents.
When I first stepped inside, the first thing I though was how large it was. It has at least twice the size it had looked from the outside, like a TARDIS-Tent. There were flaming torches held in brackets on the walls, carved wooden or stone furniture, a few worn tapestries on the walls... The whole medieval works, basically. At the front were three wooden thrones, and a person was sitting in each. The girl in the middle throne, who was wearing grey-green gear like Kari's, and looked to be a few years older than me, stood up and bowed to us, and we all bowed back, as one does when bowed to by medieval-fantasy royalty.
Wow, I say the same thing again WAYYYYY too much. I am NEVER going to make it big on my Wattpad account, back at home.Proper English, what's that? Never heard of it.
The standing girl looked relieved. "You had been gone for some time, Halbarad." she said.
Kari nodded. "I know, my liege."
"Will our new guests cause trouble?" the lady, who was probably Aragorn, asked.
Kari looked at us werewolves, considering us, before replying, "No, my liege."
"Then they can stay in the guest tents." Aragorn nodded, as if to say this is all settled now, then sat back down.
Just as I felt our audience with these Tolkienas chiefs was at an end, the boy in the throne on the right stood up, wearing grey robes with a guarded expression in his narrowed eyes.
"How can we trust them, trust them to not betray us?" he growled angrily, pointing a finger at us, and I noted with interest that it was shaking slightly.
Aragorn stood up again and turned on the guy. "You are out of place, Denathor! Hold your tongue!"
"They could've sided with our enemies!" Denathor continued, ignoring Aragorn. "How would we know? There are none we can trust in this forsaken land!"
Kari rose. "I will vouch for them." she said, as still as a sentinel.
"How do I know I can trust you, ranger?" Denathor hissed. "How can I trust you when we cannot change?!"
It looked as if every Tolkeina in the room had been hit by his words. Aragorn winced and Kari closed her eyes in sympathy, both still standing.
"Denathor." Aragorn said, her tone stern. "Stop this madness."
Denathor flung his arms out. "But I cannot! It is in me, as you know far too well, Aragorn! And when my time is served, Faramir will take me, and he will be cursed too! The whole line of Gondor is cursed!"
And with that, Denathor strode out of the room, his movements quick and angry, pulling his cloak around him.
Aragorn sighed. "Poor, poor Denathor." she muttered. "The worst off of all of us. I doubt he can handle it much longer." She looked up at us. "I'm sorry you had to witness that." she said.
I nodded, and turned to the other werewolves. "You should go. Tell the Alpha I'll be back soon, okay?"
Jade and Adam bowed to me and the Tolkeinas, and hurried out.
"Aragorn," I began. "I wish to take a tour of your lands. May I borrow Ka-Halbarad?"
Aragorn smiled and nodded, but as Kari and I exited, I could hear her muttering nervously with the other leader.
Then Éomer sprang out at us, and immediately matched our stride, walking with us.
"I saw your blunder!" she cried in a sing-song tone. "You two look so similar, hmm?"
"Stop it, Éomer." Kari said crossly. "Or should I say, F-"
"-Forest." I finished putting a name to the figure, before turning to Kari. "And I know you already."
"That ya do, acting-Beta. That ya do." Kari nodded happily.
"Thanks for rescuing me back at school." I added.
Forest shrugged. "Boys trying to be cliche and a chance to be badass. What's not to like?"
I prodded Kari. "You had a bow in your locker for what, half a year? You gotta tell your sister about those things, you know."
Kari poked me back. "I could say the same about you and your sword."
"Wait." I stopped my two companions. "I hear something."
I snuck towards one of the tents, Kari and Forest following.
There were people inside, always a good sign. I found a little hole in the fabric and put my eye up to it. Inside were two boys, and one was obviously Denathor. But then he tossed off his cloak, and his manner visibly changed. He instantly went from a haughty king to a normal teenage boy, shoulders slumped from a combination of tiredness and a perpetual hunch from playing too many video games over a small computer screen, weariness showing in his eyes.
"It's too much." he said to someone else, who I couldn't see. "The spirit will overtake me before long. And I don't want to pass it on to Faramir, and you definitely shouldn't take it again."
"Alright, that was a huge mistake on my part." the second person added, and I realised with a start that they were also male, and a male I recognised. "I legit got turned into a cliche Wattpad bad boy. I FREAKING TRIED TO SLAM A GIRL AGAINST A WALL. Nope, the spirit's yours."
Formerly-Denathor laughed. "Jax-xon! Of course it rejected you! You're not a Tolkiena!"
Jaxxon blushed.
"Aw, you're so cute when you blush." Formerly-Denathor smirked, ruffling Jaxxon's hair.
"But you won't be able to keep up the impression forever, will you, Matt?" Jaxxon asked.
Wait. WHAT???
Matt - for it undoubtably was him, now that I was looking more closely - sighed. "I doubt it. But we can at least try."He sighed again, more deeply this time, rolling his shoulders back and forth. "But for now, I'm finally free of the dastardly cloak. I can finally be myself."
And with that, he kissed Jaxxon.
My jaw dropped as Jaxxon and Matt exchanged kisses, then switched to smooching. I covered my eyes, scuttling backwards, away from the hole. I fell backwards, landing on soft grass.
"YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW." I whispered to Kari and Forest. "I CANNOT BELIEVE IT. JUST. JUST..."
Kari and Forest suspiciously crept up to the hole, then came back grinning like maniacs, Kari singing "I ship it! I ship it!" under her breath.
And then, we walked a few paces away so we wouldn't be heard by the lovebirds, then burst out laughing. One of them was a werewolf, Matt, but now also a Tolkeina, the mad king, Denathor, and one of them was a 'bad boy' who had threatened me at school, and had promptly been rekt by Kari and Forest.
This. Is. ABSOLUTELY CRAZY!!
