Everything Happens for a Reason
Reader: gender neutral
He had broken up with them.
"We just don't work out, I'm sorry," Philip explained, holding their hands. Y/n simply nodded and left, making Philip worry more than he ever had in his (short) life. The only reason he had broke off their relationship was because he was scared to hurt them. And Y/n meant more to him than his life. What he didn't know, was that this had damaged them.
"Everything happens for a reason, huh," Y/n whispered to themselves, legs dangling over the cliff's edge. They had been coming to this spot since the one bright thing in their life had left them. "I wonder what this reason is."
Nobody responded. After all, Y/n was talking to themselves. Voicing their thoughts to the trees, grass, and animals. Pondering the wonders of the water crashing the cliff at the bottom. It truly was a beautiful sound.
'Everything happens for a reason'. That's what Y/n had been telling themselves their whole life. There was a reason to why they were disowned, a reason to why they were invisible, a reason to why everything hurt so freaking much.
  Y/n never cried.
"We were so happy," they said aloud, staring at the sunset. "Well, I was. I can understand as to why it was broken off. After all, I'm me."
Unbeknownst to Y/n, Philip had snuck up on them quietly. Well, not 'sneaking up on them' completely. He had come to this same cliff to think things over ever since he had ended their relationship. And it hurt him like hell to hear Y/n talk about themselves this way. Yet he stayed silent.
"I feel like I should be mad, or hurt, or... something! But I'm empty. No emotions. No pain. Maybe that's because there really isn't anything left here for me," Y/n wondered. "I suppose I'll miss this place the most. Heh, maybe, if they even care to search for my body, they'll bury me here."
"I'd like that very much. Oh, and Philip," the boy froze as they said his name. " I'll leave him a letter. Tell him it isn't his fault. Everything happens for a reason. This was a tiny matter in the grand scheme of the universe, I suppose. Maybe this was planned to happen from the start. Wouldn't surprise me."
Y/n rose and walked away, their feet barely making any sound on the soft grass.
"You're staring again," Theodosia Burr, Philip's friend since they were nine, informed him. He shook his head, brown curls flying everywhere.
"I just can't help it. They're so beautiful," Philip smiled, thinking about Y/n who stood a few feet in front of him. Theo and Philip had decided to visit the cliff. Actually, they had been doing this ever since Philip eavesdropped on Y/n.
"You're still in love, I get it. Just go and tell them, they love you too," Theo rolled her eyes, playing with a blade of grass.
"I can't imagine how," Philip mumbled, watching Y/n. They were setting a rose on the ground. Philip cocked his head in curiosity.
"You're really stupid, Pip," Theo said, barely looking at her friend.
"They're going to jump!" Philip suddenly realized, on his feet and. racing toward Y/n in a moment. Theo looked up in alarm and quickly followed.
Y/n knew Theo and Philip were behind them. They didn't want to do this in front of them, they knew how painful this would be.
"I love you," Y/n said, just loud enough for Philip to hear. Their last words. And they were proud of those words.
It seemed as though time slowed down. Y/n stepped forward, jumping from the cliff. Theo screamed in agony as Philip shouted profanities.
The moment sped up. Philip dashed down the very narrow, very gravelly, and very steep path to the beach below. Y/n plunged into the water. Philip dove in after them, desperate to save them.
Every second felt like an hour. Philip Hamilton searched the water frantically. He launched to the surface and gasped before diving back in. No Y/n. Another breath. No Y/n. Another breath. No Y/n.
Finally, finally, he found them. Philip swam to the beach, gasping for breath, tired. He checked for a pulse. Upon feeling no beat, he tried CPR. The attempt was futile. They were dead.
  Y/n L/n was dead.
"They left this for you," Theo said softly, tears running down her face.
Philip held the rose tenderly. A slip of paper had been tied to the stem and thorns had been pulled. The five words made him cry even harder.

"I have so much work to do," Philip whispered to himself, kneeling in front of a tombstone. They had been buried on the cliff, just as they requested.
