- Chapter Nine -

"You're a mysterious girl." Joey said as I walked back, "I never know what you're gonna do next."

I only nodded and walked back over to the window I had fallen in love with, gluing my eyes to the flickering lights and then said, "Let's keep it that way."

"I was hoping I could get to know you." He said from behind me.

"Nobody wants to get to know me." I snapped back, "and if they do, they regret it."

"Why?"

I turned back to look him in the eye, "Because I'm a fucked up person." I sighed. "I'm a fucked up person with a fucked up life, a fucked up family, a fucked up job, a fucked up head and a fucked up life."

He stared at me but then nodded. "There's something so familiar about you..." He trailed off but then went back to what we were first talking about, "Anyways, I just wanna learn a thing or two about you, just for today."

"Fine." I gave in, "But no personal questions!"

"I was honestly only going to ask you your favourite colour." He chuckled, taking a sip of his water.

I giggled with him, "Okay, it's a dark burgundy." I received a nod, "you?"

"Blue."

"Ah, but the question is, what kind of blue?" I looked him dead in the eye. Blue was such a vague answer. Who knows if it was light blue, or pale blue, or navy blue, or even cyan blue.

He laughed, "I guess like a royal blue, but a more natural royal blue, like the dark waters."

I nodded slowly and turned back to the window to relieve awkwardness. "What's your story?" He spoke again.

"I consider that a personal question."

"I don't mean your life story, just, why'd you come to Los Angeles?"

"I consider that pretty personal as well," I breathed in before I spoke again, "but I guess the simple answer is, I was running away from something. Or perhaps, chasing something."

"Chasing what?" He asked, tilting his head the slightest bit making the lights behind me shine into his eyes on a different angle. Making them sparkle in a way I hadn't seen before. I was falling for him, fast, and I needed to avoid this at all costs.

"Chasing the night. I guess. A certain cover for wrong doings. Something to be thrown over me like a dark blanket, maybe shield me from my past. It's hard to explain."

"I understand" he said softly, making my lips curve up into an uncontrollable little smile.

The night went on, as I thought it never would. I had never been able to have a nice conversation for this long with someone in over 3 years. It was amazing, really. We ended up talking about hobbies, and dislikes, and just crazy random stuff. But the thing I love most about this man is that he never even tried to make me talk about things I was sensitive about, and never built on the things I would give quick, short answers to. It was like he knew me already. And I felt like I knew him. But it's when you get to know someone, then it's all downhill from there, and I was determined to not let that happen.

About half an hour ago, Joey had moved himself from the couch to the window where I was sitting. And just now, the sky became a little bit brighter and I had realized I stayed there all night. In someone else's house, not having sex, but just talking. For one whole night. I felt myself suddenly get extremely tired, and as if reading my mind, and probably my face, Joey said, "You look tired. You're always welcome to stay here and sleep, you know. I have an extra room if you'd like, and I can get you breakf-"
