- Chapter Eleven -
I woke up in a moment of realization and panic. With wide eyes, I remembered what Tiffany mockingly said to me. What if last night she found Joey. What if they're good friends, even dating now. What if Joey wants to tell me about the fun time they had, and how much of an amazing person she was. All these questions made me want to hide when he'd come to my door today.
I had no idea when he was coming, but after seeing my clock read 11:23AM, I knew I had to start getting ready. I started by washing off the makeup I neglected to wash off last night, and then going through my closet.
There wasn't much other to chose from than short skirts and tight shirts but I had one idea for what I could wear. I pushed everything aside until I found the lavender colour I was looking for. I had bought this dress so many months ago and never found the right moment to wear it. It wasn't anything special but it was the best I could do. I threw it onto my bed and went to go take a shower.
**
I stared at myself in the mirror leaned against my wall after putting the dress on. It finished right above my knees and had little sleeves that stopped just after my shoulders. It looked a bit bare, so I clipped a thick beige fabric belt around my waist.
I stepped closer to see my face. Without makeup, you could still see the black eye from days ago, with reddish colours closer to my eyebrow and a more yellow under my slowly healing eye, and a scar was left on my cheekbone. The rest of my body felt better, with only pain at the touch of my fingers, including my only slightly still bruised up knee.
I quickly covered up my ugly flaws with makeup and rushed downstairs to have a bit of a breakfast at noon. The cafe was empty, even though it was just after lunch.
"Hey, Paul," I said, distracting him from what looked like he was baking cookies.
"Hey! Meghan! You look nice, do you want me to make you something for lunch?"
"No, no" I said, waving my arms, "I'll just have a quick muffin"
"Oh okay. Where are you going in such a hurry?" He asked, searching for the muffin in the little glass case at the front cashier.
"Um, a friend is picking me up..." I said, I don't think I have ever said those words before once in my life.
"A friend?!" Paul exclaimed, like it was the most exciting thing he'd heard in a lifetime. He hesitated a bit before saying, "Is it that fit boy with the hair?" He asked, making corresponding hand motions to what he was saying.
I laughed, "Yeah that's Joey."
"Well have fun," he finished, tossing me the muffin from behind the counter. I smiled and walked back to my room to longingly stare out my window for Joey to come.
He didn't specify a time, but before long I saw the familiar face walk into the little bakery, making my heart run around in circles inside of me. After a bit of time, I heard a knock at my door. I answered it eagerly.
"Hi" I smiled as I opened the door. He looked great, as always. He wore a pale blue t-shirt with black skinny jeans. His hair was styled better than I could ever do, and his face was without a flaw.
"Hey!" He said, coming into my embarrassing little room. He gulped before saying, "I was wondering... Do you wanna go for lunch with me?"
"Uh, it's okay, I just ate." I retorted, thinking about the muffin I ate while waiting to see Joey walking up the street.
"Ate what?" He smirked.
"A muffin..." I looked down at my feet, knowing he had me cornered.
"Then we're going out for lunch!" He said, waving his hand towards to door for me to come. I frowned, and looked back at the jar beneath my night table filled less than half way of money.
"I don't..." I sighed, "I don't have enough money to go out for lunch."
He stared at me, then smiled, "I invited you, so I'm paying, so let's go!!" Obviously he was hungry. So with a smile on my face, I followed him out of my room, and into his car.
**
We sat across from each other in a two person booth in a small, vintage restaurant. Everything looked so fancy, and the place smelt of fresh flowers. A soft music was playing in the background, and I tried to remember the last time I was in a real restaurant.
"So... What'd you wanna talk about?" I asked, hesitantly. Tiffany's face popped into my mind instantly, and I hoped and hoped he wouldn't mention her.
"Oh nothing," he started, I exhaled with relief, "I just wanted to see you again." He smiled, genuinely, and I found myself staring deeper into his eyes. Maybe because I wanted to read his eyes for lies, of maybe because I just wanted to look into those eyes for as long as I could before I'd never see them again. All I could do was laugh and blush to what he said, I had no way of responding.
"How's your life been?" He asked.
"Treacherous." I said with a sigh, taking this moment to look around the room for a bit longer. I had noticed Joey just staring at me, like he was trying to uncover something.
"You are so familiar," he said with a low voice, "And I don't know why."
I laughed, "I've tried to blend in quote a bit, I must be like one of your friends."
"No, it feels like I've known you for a good chunk of my life..." He said with a twisted look on his face, "Where did you live before here?"
I stayed silent, not knowing how to respond. I never had the time to think of a lie for where I've lived in the past. It never crossed my mind that someone would ever ask that. I was relieved when I saw our food being placed in front of us, something to change the subject.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked that." He stared down at his plate. I smiled reassuringly, and we continued to laugh and talk for the next our or so. In the end, I found myself in his apartment, sitting in the same exact spot as before. It wasn't night out yet, but the view was still amazing.
"I can't get over how beautiful you look today," he said, breaking the long silence. I blushed and ran my hand through my hair.
"I'm not good with compliments," I turned away from him, my face a boiling red, "I've never really gotten them."
"Well you deserve more." He said, so calmly that I could see myself melting into his arms and staying there for the entire night.
The day went on, as it would. I could never really explain or resite what we talked about. We jumped from topic to topic, conversation to conversation. Joey was such a smart and observant talker. He knew what I was sensitive about and stood away from it. He had to have complimented me in some way around 25 times during our entire conversation. He is everything I want, and everything I need to stay away from. And just as I thought those exact things, Joey said something that defied everything I came to Los Angeles for.
"I think I'm falling for you, Bree."
