warnings: being misgendered, talk of gender dysphoria, physical abuse mention, slurs

Human AU where Patton, Logan, Virgil and Roman are roommates. Roman was desperate to find roommates after being kicked out for being transgender, so he introduced himself as Jessica and a she. Also, Patton is pansexual, Logan and Virgil are bisexual and Roman is gay.

It was around 7:30am. Roman woke up, staring at the ceiling for a few minutes before finally standing up and running his hand through his hair, mentally preparing himself for a day filled with dysphoria and being misgendered. He started to walk out his room and down the stairs.

Roman couldn't blame the other's though. He had not told them, let alone mentioned it. He reached the bottom of the stairs and greeted Patton, who was making his way into the kitchen.

'Morning, Pat.'

'Good morning, kiddo! Sleep well?' Roman smiled softly at the word 'kiddo'.

'I've had better nights,' Roman said, following Patton into the kitchen, 'what about you?'

'I slept alright. And you didn't sleep well? Any reason?'

Roman felt anxiety rush over him. He couldn't fall asleep as he was planning on coming out soon, but he wanted to come out to Patton, Logan and Virgil at once. If at least one of the three accepted him, he could be protected from any abuse, verbal or physical, from the others.

'I'll tell you later,' Roman mumbled, making himself coffee, 'it's... quite important.'

'Do you want to tell me what it's about?'

'Uh... Its something to do with... being... LGBTQ+...' Roman mumbled, adverting his eyes from Patton. He knew he was pansexual, but he didn't know how he responded to transgender identifies.

'Jess,' Patton walked closer to him, 'you know I'm pan, you can tell me anything about your sexuality.'

'It's... not to do with my sexuality...'

Patton looked at Roman before realisation hit him.

'Is it to do with... your gender?' Roman nodded, looking down at his coffee.

'I'll explain it all later...' he let out a shaky sigh, 'I'm going to watch something to calm me down...'

'Okay, kiddo.'

Roman walked over to the couch, still looking down at his coffee, not wanting to meet Patton's eyes. Putting on a random Disney movie, Aladdin, he sat down.

A few minutes later, Patton had joined him, but did not say anything. It was now around 8am, and Logan had walked down the stairs.

'Good morning Patton, Jessica.'

'Good morning Logan! Sleep well?' Patton turned and smiled at Logan.

Roman was not longer focused on the movie or Patton and Logan's conversation. Instead, he was over-thinking everything. Will they hate him like their old roommates did? Will they kick him out? Will they abuse him?

Roman snapped out of these thoughts when he heard the rough footsteps of their last roommate, Virgil, coming down the stairs.

'Morning Pat,' he was the first one to be noticed by the purple-haired man, 'hey Logan', Virgil's eyes darted to Roman, who was sitting at the edge of the couch, hoodie over his head.

'Sup princess?' Roman cringed at the nickname. He turned away from Virgil, pulling out his phone to distract himself.

'What's up with her?' Roman recoiled at the muttered words.

'She needs to talk to us about something,' Patton responded, voice low as well.

'Jessica?' he looked up, not making eye contact with any of them.

'Please can you... stop calling me that?' Roman muttered, hesitation in his voice as he put his phone away.

'Why?' Virgil sat on the couch.

'I'm...' Roman felt anxiety fill him, 'I'm not female...'

'That doesn't make sense! How are you not female?' Roman felt his anxiety tighten around him at the words from Virgil.

'I'm transgender... Please can you call me... Roman?' he finally muttered, physically moving away from the three, 'please... don't kick me out! I don't have anywhere else to go! My parents disowned me, my last roommates threatened me if-'

'Jes- Roman,' Patton said softly, 'you're safe.'

'Patton's correct. We're all accepting of transgender identities,' Logan responded

'Yeah, don't worry about it,' Virgil looked a bit ashamed, 'sorry for jumping to conclusions earlier, Roman.'

'It's fine. I was just... afraid that you'd react like my old roommates,' Roman had a bit more confidence knowing they were accepting.

'How did they react, if you don't mind me asking?' Logan's voice was gentle.

'They... hit me and called me a tranny, telling me to accept being female or else they'd...' Roman's voice trailed of, 'they didn't tell me to leave, but I left out of fear and found this apartment.'

'Oh Roman, I'm sorry...' Patton moved closer to Roman.

'It's fine, Patton. I'm just... happy that you guys are accepting.'

The rest of the day went fine, a few 'she's' and 'Jess'' slipping, but nonetheless, Roman was happy that the three were accepting and adapting well.

The most accepting had to be Patton. He suggested good binders and packers for Roman's dysphoria, he got Roman to start showering again as Roman couldn't look at his body without having a panic attack. As much as Roman loved this support, he wondered how Patton knew all this.
