Part 33

The dusky twilight gradually amalgamated into gray plunging the two oblivious souls into darkness. The two spirits had been gazing into each other without a thought but feeling complete and at peace. The ecstatic reverie wasn't even interrupted with the large drops stealthily being showered over them. Finally, the heavens decided to pour down, and both sprang into action.

Sameer sprang into action first, abruptly standing up. But the unconsciousness and the expenditure of energy rendered his feet wobbly. Naina immediately caught hold of his shoulder to steady him and they looked deep into each other's oceanic eyes. The showers increased in intensity and before they could be soaked to the last thread, Sameer directed, "wahan chalo".

Naina hurriedly gathered the few things she had brought and they almost sprinted to the alcove of the cave. It wasn't an opening to go inside but rather carved naturally as a niche with just enough space for one person to take temporary shelter. The overhead protruding boulder rock jutted out just enough to diffuse the straight rain. However, the rain and wind gods collaborated such that the heavy downpour was slanted by the gusty winds. Though Naina was completely sure of her safety with Sameer, she was suddenly aware of being in such proximity that their arms, shoulders, side bodies could be touching. She tried to scoot a bit away but not before Sameer noticed that her action would drench her quickly.

He wasn't sure what she actually felt or thought about him but he knew he loved her and just like that his protective instincts kicked in again. He gave up his side of the niche and turned completely to face her. His eyes burned with an intensity so strong when he came dangerously close to her that she gulped visibly. Her palms clutched tightly onto whatever she could grab on. Slowly, he lifted one hand and placed a palm on one cave rock on the side of her face. While she was busy gauging his action, he did the same on the other side and stepped an inch closer and bent his head over her. His towering six feet completely sheltered her petite barely five feet frame. It took her a second to realize what he was doing. He was crowding her personal space but not intimidating. His stance had her completely sheltered from the rain and his back was bearing the burnt of the lone drops or the occasional slant shower that almost drenched his head and behind.

The gesture touched her heart and overwhelmed her. She returned his intense gaze, one filled with gratitude and something else. She knew he was very important to her and she had already tagged her feelings for him as love but couldn't name those in his eyes. It was a potency with burning desire, but was it for her of was it something else altogether. How could it be though? They had just met.

Little did she know that he had the same feelings and the same thoughts filled his brain but with a deeper burning intensity. He felt pulled towards her like an electromagnet and had to exert his iron control to not fall prey to his own whims. He had to protect her from his ownself.

None could keep a tab on the passage of time before the rain stopped completely, but neither broke the trance for a while. Only a light tremor that rippled through Naina's body made him aware that she, although not drenched, was still wet and the wind had a slight chill due to the cooling effect and dense foliage. Sameer relaxed his pose snd released her from his imaginary grip, "hume chalna chahiye. Bahut andhera ho gaya hai!"

Naina was still enthralled and hardly registersed his suggestion but the shivers continued while she was impervious to that. Finally, he sent a directive in decibels a notch higher. "Chale!"

She snapped out of it but no words came out, she only affirmed with a small nod of the head. With a gentleman's chivalry, he took a step back spreading his hand in front of her to let her precede him. A second later, he followed her closely behind admiring the back of her head with a slightly titled posture trying to gauge her facial reactions. He had sensed that suddenly she was nervous around him when moments ago, he had clutched her hand and hadn't let go and she too hadn't shied away. But now in the wake, things had changed drastically and he didn't know what to say or do to make her comfortable.
