Haechan plastered on the most convincing smile he could manage, and handed the customer his drink. The warmth of the drink left his hand and his annoyance with the customer grew. Who in the world ordered an obscenely complicated, non caffeinated coffee at two a.m. on a Monday? Haechan was on his second night shift, and he was unbelievably tired.
He looked up from the counter to see yet another customer, with his hands
rubbing together, trying to get warm. Haechan made brief eye contact with him, and smiled somewhat genuinely. He’s cute, he thought, and asked him what his order was.“I’ll have a plain cappuccino, please.”
“M’kay, name?”
“Mark. What’s yours?”
Haechan looked up from the register to see that the customer was smiling. He looked back down and rubbed the sleep from his eyes.
“It’s none of your business. That’ll be six dollars.”
Out of the corner of his eye, Haechan saw Mark frown. He leaned on the counter, waiting for his drink to be ready. Haechan moved around behind the counter, making the ordered drink while Mark tried to start up a conversation.
“You working the night shift alone? That must be tiring.”
“It depends on the customers.”
Mark snorted. “You’re pretty lively for two a.m.”
“Just trying to get paid. Also, who goes to a coffee shop at two a.m. on a freaking Monday morning? You’re pretty much guaranteed the workers will hate you.”
Mark laughed as Haechan handed him his drink. He noticed his nametag, which read
‘HELLO, I’M: Haechan’.
As he walked out of the door, he turned back for a moment.
“See you again sometime, Haechan!”
“Hey! How did you know my name?”
“Ever notice you had a nametag?”
The door shut quietly, and Haechan groaned. He glanced down at his nametag, which was pinned to his black apron. As he yawned, he lifted the worn apron off, and untied it in the back. Hanging it from a hook in the far corner, he flipped the light switch. He walked out of the shop, switching the sign from OPEN to CLOSED.
Locking the door, he turned around and headed home to his boyfriend.
