Cassie
A couple of days have passed since lily mentioned she had plans for us on my birthday. I have been purposely avoiding the subject hoping she forgot about it. I didn't want to sound like an ungrateful friend I mean she's going through all the trouble so why can't I just be a good friend. Honestly I'm to damn tired to do anything I work 36 hour shifts sometimes, the last thing I'm thinking about is partying.
I shake the thought away from my head and sit up on the corner of my bed I need to start getting ready I have the night shift tonight. Just then lily appears at my door and lightly taps on the door.
"Hey you work tonight?" She asks
"Yeah I'm just about to get ready" I reply
"Alright well I just came in here to remind you we still need to hash out your birthday plans" she reminds me
Shit!
I thought I got away with it but now she's giving me her puppy dog look which is why I had to say
"Okay fine we'll do something" I roll my eyes
"YES YES YES" she yells
"Okay I'm going to start brainstorming " she jumpsAnd just like that she turns and runs to her room without even saying goodbye. What did I just agree to I am so screwed. I am going to regret this aren't I. (little did I know I really would come to regret it)
I finally got up and went to the restroom to shower, as I stood under the warm water I started to think of what could really possibly go wrong if I let lily take care of everything. I mean how bad could it be, I deserve at least one night of letting my hair lose and not having a care in the world. I guess we'll find out because I already agreed so no going back now.
I turned off the water and grabbed my towel to dry off I hadn't realize I drifted off into my thoughts and now I'm running late. I ran to my room leaving a wet trail behind me and got dressed as quickly as possible. Once I was done I ran out the door and made my way to the hospital. Lily is going to be so pissed I left the floor wet.
Night shifts are my favorite they always have been, just because they get hectic and it keeps me on my toes. Nights are where you learn the most, you see things you don't expect and your able to think on your toes even though your exhausted. You can't even put your head down for a second because the next time you pick it up 4 hours have gone by. Tonight was no different I had 2 incoming traumas and ER patients to take care of. The usual stomach pains, chest pains, and patients who didn't want to go to work the next day so they just needed a doctors note. As I was helping out a patient I hear the commotion and look up.
"I have a multiple GSW, one to the lower abdomen and one to the neck." Reid exclaims
I rush to help him
"I have a through and through on the lower abdomen." I notify Reid
"Neck has no bullet but I see some remaining fragments we need to clean and pack the wound" Reid says
"Let's get him stabilized and hang a unit of O neg before he bleeds out on us" our attending says walking toward the patient. We do as we're told.
"Alright let's get him up to the OR stat!" He tells us with urgency. And we run...
2 hours later
I stand outside the Operating room facing down to the floor just trying to catch my breathe.
"We can't save them all Cassie." I hear Reid say
"He came in with to many injuries we did all we could don't beat yourself up his body just couldn't handle the trauma"I sigh
He walks me to an on-call room because he knows I need a minute to compose myself. He sits with me for a while without saying a word he knows me so well. We just sit for I dont know how long before we both stand up from the bed
"Thank you Reid for being here for me it means a lot to me" I say honestly
"Of course Cassie I am always here for you don't forget that" he replies
Maybe I made a mistake breaking up with him. I quickly bury that thought in the back of my mind.
He hugs me and walks off to finish his rounds.
