Dorothy's POV

In, out. In, out. I tried to steady my breathing as I stared out at the bright lights ahead. Rivers of sweat ran down my body.

"Pull yourself together Dorothy, you're better than this," I mutter to myself. Once again I stare into the bright lights, looking for any sign of what was to come, even though I already know it is nothing good. If anything, what I am about to participate in is the opposite of good.

I absentmindedly stroke Toto, his soft grey hair like silk beneath my fingers. Yet another change the stylist had made to us. I had also been 'changed'. My hair was in its normal braids into pigtails but it was curled and shiny.  I was dressed in, of course, my stereotypical dress and red sparkly shoes that I wore when I was trying the kill the witch. The only difference is it's shorter and bordered with delicate lace. Were these touches necessary, well, in the capitol the fancier it is and the more skin shown the better.

I look around at my competitors. Every time I see a new face my belief in my ability to kill these people shrinks. They have families and lives, not to mention they are innocent of any crimes. The only thing that gave me the strength to kill the witch was the fact that she had ruined others lives.  Who am I to deprive these other tributes of the life they deserve? My chariot began to roll. I could just make out the twinkling of stars on the wizards' robes as they rolled out. Then all too soon I was under everyone's gaze but like a zoo animal in a cage, there was nothing I could do.

I stepped into the apartment Toto and I were given. It's quite a step up from my cottage and seems to be awfully big for just one average 16 year old. I lay down on the soft bed, and then immediately scramble out. It was almost like I was drowning in a marshmallow, I shivered, glared at it, then opted for the floor. What a great start to this nightmare. Toto jumped down beside me and snuggled in.

From what I saw at the parade the competition is tough. There were a couple of wizards from Harry Potter one of them the dude himself and Gandalf from Lord of the rings. I think I saw Aeylinin from Throne of Glass and some other fella from that book in one of the chariots as well. They acted like they were way above us and truth be told, they are. Both of them are trained killers and definite threats in the arena. Judging where I stand amidst these tributes is impossible. It doesn't matter whether my level of skills is at the top or bottom, either way, I am royally screwed.

Toto's POV

Bark. Woof. Food. Weird place. Dorothy. I am good boy. Water. Dorothy. Nap. Woof. Woof. Dorothy sad. Help. Love. Dorothy happy. I am happy.

Bad grammar as Toto is just a dog
