As a young girl, Hua Xiu Mei has been adept in music, literature and wartime knowledge. Her mother, a beautiful and demure noblewoman named Hua Ziyuan who many people believed she was related to the female war hero, Hua Mulan(it is not known in official text if that is actually true) raised her daughter with a firm but loving hand, teaching her music. At just seven years old, she became proficient in playing the guqin, singing and also playing the flute. The young girl never knew her father personally, but knew that he was a respected general known throughout Mt. Chang. Because of that she took care of the manual labor which was easy due to her tomboyish nature which led her to be made fun of by the local girls in her village for her mud caked feet and calloused hands due to working in the fields every day. She later befriends Zhao Yun one day when she fell off the tree picking peaches for her mother as he treated a scratch she sustained on her knee which would start a childhood bond between the two.

Xiu Mei's fighting prowess was not revealed until her early teens when she expressed interest in learning the chang gun(staff rod). Despite the length of the weapon, she proved to be quite profecient with the rod. It was at that time she decided to become a warrior like her father was. She also adopted her father's surname while also changing her name to Xianghua, to separate herself from the demure young little girl she once was. However, due to her gender she was not taken seriously and was made fun of but that did not stop her from wanting to quell the chaos. She was going to end the chaos by her own terms. When she reached adulthood, she would grow to be a very beautiful young woman. The Yellow Turban Rebellion had risen and Xianghua had joined Gongsun Zan's army along with Zhao Yun. Making good on their promise as children, the two later married.

After silencing the Yellow Turban Rebellion, Xianghua later meets the three she had helped. Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. Xianghua because drawn to Liu Bei's childlike innocence and pure, virtuous heart and replied that he is someone the people need to rule amongst the chaos. Her words convinced him and thus would be the start of the Shu Kingdom. She would also birth her eldest daughter, Zhao Xinyu through her husband and childhood sweetheart as well as bore him two sons Zhao Tong and Zhao Guang a few years later after Xinyu. Xianghua's passion for music returned as well as she would always play the guqin and sing through endless nights. Her melodies as well as her beauty and brown-violet eyes would draw in Fa Zheng. Knowing his reputation, Xianghua nonetheless befriended him but as the years pass, this friendship would turn into something passionate yet forbidden. Xianghua would become pregnant as a result of their private intimacy. Since it was forbidden for a woman to become impregnated by an unmarried man, especially if the woman was already married. The Emperor wanted Xianghua to kill the child but she was spared thanks to Liu Bei intervening. She would give birth to her youngest daughter, Fa Li.

Xianghua's life would tragically end in 219 AD. During the battle of Huiji, Xianghua suffered massive wounds protecting Xinyu from enemy archers. Although she did well in hiding her injuries, she would later succumb to her injuries as she was playing her guqin by the lotus pond, her favorite place she would always go to when she needed to go away from the chaos. Her body was found by her daughters. Xianghua's death hit the Shu Kingdom hard due to her being well known for not only her beauty and bravery, but her beautiful melodies played on the flute and guqin and her kindness and empathy which had given her a bond with her fellow soldiers, the villagers and her handmaidens. Liu Bei buried her personally, giving her high honors as the first female Cavalier General of Shu and burying her flute and guqin by her so her music will stay in the afterlife. In the Romance of The Three Kingdoms novellation, her husband Zhao Yun would later marry Ma Chao's sister, Ma Yunlu a couple of years after Xianghua's death.
