Midnight

Alexia and I walk in the pitch black night, trying not to make a single noise. Our feet sink in the immaculate fresh snow, making a light crunch sound. A crashing sound suddenly breaks the silence.

"Darn it! Bloody stone!"

I turn around and light up Alexia with my torch. The girl is straightening up, covered with snow.

"What did you get me into this time..." she growls.

"In a crazy adventure." I respond, smirking.

"Adventure? No. Crazy? Yes. I'm warning you, if we ever get caught by the hooded guards, I leave you high and dry." she says grumpily.

"You would say that I forced you to come?" I say in an amused tone.

"Yes, and-..."

"Shh!" I suddenly whisper, turning off my torch.

My ears perk up, being sure that I have heard a noise. As I scrutinise the surroundings, I manage to discern a walking tall shadow, about fifty metres from us. They are making incomprehensible grunting sounds.

"A snow golem." Alexia whispers to me, noticing my confusion. "If he ever sees us, he will bury us in the snow and raise the alarm. I saw one attacking Nina one day. It was not a pretty picture, believe me. She took one week to recover from that..."

The magical creature doesn't seem to notice us and continues on his way.

"How close are we?" I ask, as we start to walk again.

"We are almost there." Alexia assures me. "Her office is situated in the Northern Tower, on the last floor. By the way, I still think it is a foolishness. You are going to get caught, and maybe expelled! Or worse! Get ME expelled!"

"Stop worrying..." I sigh.

A few minutes later, Alexia shows me a window at the very top of the tower of the castle.

"That's the one." she tells me.

"Are you sure?" I ask her.

"Absolutely. The view is beautiful from up there." she replies.

"How do you know?" I ask, frowning.

"I have already been called in her office once... A matter of enchanted buckets...Anyway." she responds, wincing.

"Okay... Wait for me, I won't be long." I tell her.

"I'll stay here... Oh, while you are at it, if you see an examination subject, don't hesitate."she says, leaning against the wall. "It won't make much difference from this point..."

I concentrate, and take off to the sky. I blink as I notice that the window is open. Could luck be with me?
I enter the office silently and look around. The room is plunged into darkness. I turn on my torch, and I am finally able to see the details of the soberly decorated room. Some dusty jars are lined up on some worn out wooden shelves. Inside of them, human-looking eyes are floating in some strange liquid.
I wince in an ill-at-ease way, and then try to focus back on my task.

"Orb of Sia!" I mutter, casting an attraction spell.

Nothing happens.

"That won't work, Eirlys."

I jump in surprise and turn around. My eyes widen. Elliana is there, sitting in an old armchair and staring at me with a mysterious smirk on her face. The teacher claps her hands, and an open fire suddenly appears in the hearth of the fireplace, lighting up the room with a shaky light. I stare at her silently, fearing her reaction.
