Ren didn't have to wait long until he figured out what the gas did. When he was walking back to his room he saw his parents standing in the hallway. He wanted to run towards them, the first motive made him worry after all, but suddenly they were dead.

The gas makes you see your loved ones dying.

The surgical masks give you less hallucinations, but it doesn't completely block out the gas.

Not wanting to be alone, Ren decides to go talk to someone. As if on instinct he walks to Kaida's room and rings the doorbell.

The bluenette opens the door "Oh, Ren, it's you. I thought I was imagining something again."

He shakes his head "No, it's really me. May I come in? I'd like to hang out with you."

Kaida nods "Sure." She sits down on the couch and pulls her legs to her chest, wrapping her arms around them "Anything you want to talk about?"

"I didn't have a topic in mind. How about we just ask each other questions." Ren sits down too.

"Okay. You can go first."

"Hm..." Ren thinks for a moment "What are your hobbies other than calligraphy."

Kaida twirls a strand of blue hair around her finger "I enjoy reading, but sometimes I write a bit too. I really like stories." She rests her chin on her hand "Okay, my turn. What's your favourite colour?"

"Probably black and white."

The bluenette chuckles "Surprising."

Ren shrugs but smiles anyway "You were the one who asked."

"True. You can ask me something again."

After mentally debating if it's a bit too personal Ren shrugs it off and asks "Did you want to become the Ultimate Calligrapher?"

Kaida seems a bit taken aback but she shifts her sitting position to tailor sitting "To be honest, I used to dream about becoming the Ultimate Artist but I'm not really good at anything art-related." She admits "Then I got into calligraphy and I enjoyed doing it. So I guess you could say I wanted and didn't want my talent. What about you? Did you want to be the Ultimate Chess Player?"

"Not really. I mean, I like chess but I don't like having such a special title, you know?" When Kaida nods Ren continues "I'm doing it to help my mom."

She tilts her head "What happened with your mother?" She seems to realize what she just asked and her pink eyes widen and she starts apologizing in a panic "Sorry, that was very inconsiderate of me. I shouldn't have asked. Forget I ever said that!"

"Calm down, I wasn't going to answer anyway because it's my turn." Ren's response earns him a small laugh from the girl "I'll answer that question if you answer mine, okay?"

Kaida nods "Okay. What is your question?"

"Have you always been so emotional? Sorry, if it sounds a bit offensive."

She shakes her head "It's okay, you didn't offend me. Many people have asked me that." She goes back to twirling her hair around her finger "But yes, I've always been very emotional. I used to hate it but over time I learned to accept it's a part of me. Having feelings isn't a sin."

"Why did you hate-" Ren is cut off by the bluenette.

"Hey, you have to answer my question first, remember?" By looking at her eyes Ren can tell that she's smiling.

He chuckles "Yeah, you're right. My mom has Chronic Kidney Disease so she's in the hospital quite often and needs treatment because the doctors still haven't found a donor for her. So in order to help pay for her medical bills I joined chess competitions to win prize money. When I was scouted by Hope's Peak Academy I hoped it would help my mom, but now I'm stuck in this place." Ren sighs.
