"What in the name of StarClan happened?" Brackenstar prompted, bounding forwards. No other cats were covered in blood, only Lionsun. His golden tabby pelt was mattered with blood. Brackenstar sniffed his deputy before stepping backwards, jerking his head away quickly. Cinderpaw and Amberpaw blinked, switching gazes from Lionsun to Brackenstar. The red-brown tom turned to address the rest of the Clan, turning his back on the patrol.
"What do you think happened?" Amberpaw whispered in Cinderpaw's ear.
"LeafClan, most likely." It was Brindlepool, her two kits behind her. She sat beside Cinderpaw, Quietkit and Bramblekit sitting at her paws.
Brindlepool glanced at the two apprentices before swallowing and looking back at Brackenstar. The tom exhaled before padding towards Great Rock, looking at all the cats of TideClan. Everyone was already out from their dens, turning to face Brackenstar. Cinderpaw wrapped her tail around her paws. In front of her, she noticed Dovefeather, her stomach big. Cinderpaw realised with sorrow that this would be Dovefeather's last litter, since her mate had been killed by a monster moons ago.
"T-TideClan," the red-brown tabby started, standing on the edge of the rock. "TideClan, Lionsun is unresponsive." He closed his eyes, trying to find the words. "Cats, Lionsun... he mind not make it through the night..."
"But... Mossleaf hasn't even checked him!" Jayfrost tried to find a reason as to why the deputy would live.
"Once Mossleaf has checked him, we'll know for sure," Brackenstar answered calmly.
Cinderpaw glanced over at Lionsun's body, her heart sinking. What if he didn't survive? They needed him! He was an excellent deputy and TideClan wouldn't be able to make it if he joined StarClan. Mossleaf slunk out from her den, her mouth full with herbs of all kinds. Mossleaf cast a glance at Cinderpaw before looking away sharply and stopping next to Lionsun. Skyblaze and Ferngaze sat near each other, staring at Lionsun and grinning and snorting with quiet laughter. Cinderpaw couldn't believe them. Brackenstar continued talking, while Cinderpaw nudged Amberpaw.
Amberpaw rolled her eyes that were filled with sadness and stared expectingly at Cinderpaw. The chestnut-white-black she-cat pointed her tail at her sister, disapproval shining in her eyes. Ferngaze noticed and sharply poked Skyblaze as the two cats put their heads down and began whispering to each other. Cinderpaw glared at them and was surprised when cats started breaking away from the meeting. Brackenstar lept from Great Rock and pushed through the vines hanging over his den, in the rock.
Ferngaze was suddenly at her side, Amberpaw still seated on her other side. The apprentice glared up at her sister, a deep loathing filling her heart. How dare the two warriors talk while Lionsun could be dying! How dare they didn't care about him. But then again, Ferngaze had no heart and Skyblaze was becoming almost just as bad.
"You should be glad he's joining StarClan," Skyblaze said, who had followed her friend over.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Amberpaw hissed, making her way to her paws angrily.
"At least he won't have to suffer," Ferngaze mewed, narrowing her eyes mockingly. "One cat out of the way."
"What?" Cinderpaw stared at them, shocked. "You should be hoping he survives!"
"Why should I? He only gets in the way of my ambition," Ferngaze continued.
"And ours." Branchshadow, Sharpclaw and Longear came into view, standing beside Ferngaze and Skyblaze.
