Falling Back into Burzek

21st District

They take Brennan back to the district and put her in the interrogation room, the commander is waiting for Voight in his office.

"I heard she confessed," commander says.
"More or less." Hank says.
"They're going to make an example of her, they're going to see this as premidated for firing her" commander explains.
"Anyway this could help Ruzek?" Hank asks.
"Let me see what I can do," commander replies.

Hank walks out of his office and address the team,"make sure your reports are detailed and accurate. This is going to be scrutinized by everyone."

Ruzek phones ring," hello,Ruzek"
"Officer Ruzek, if you can bring a character witness that these charges are out of the ordinary the courts will consider dropping al charges. The hearing is it 11am tomorrow," the DA tells him.
Hank can see look on the face and calls Adam into the office.

"You alright?" Hank asks.
"Yeah, the DA just said that if I can find a character witness to say this isn't ordinary for me, they would consider dropping the charges," Adam explains.
"We both know who it needs to be," Hank says.
"I think Kev would do it," Adam suggests.
"No, he's your best friend of course he's going to say good things about you. It needs to be Kim." Voight explains.
"Why Kim?" Adam asks.
"You we're engaged once and yet she is still willing to be responsible for you, that says a lot about the kind of man you are," Hank explains.
"I don't know boss. What if they bring up the engagement?" Adam asks.
"Just talk to Kim and prepare. Go home" Hank says.

Adam leaves the office and finds Kim and tells her that Voight said for the two of them head home. They head back to Kim's in silence. She can tell that there's something on Adams mind but he's debating it. She waits until they got home to ask.

"Are you okay?" She asks.
"I need a favor. But let me fully explain before you answer, okay?" He says.
"Okay I'm listening," she replies.
"The DA called and said if I can find a character witness who can testify that this isn't my normal behavior, they would consider dropping all charges. I was going to ask Kev but Voight thinks they would see him as biased since he's my best friend. He suggests that I ask you, since you know, we were in engaged once and yet you're still willing to responsible for me. They will probably ask you about the engagement, so if you don't want to do it I understand," Adam says not meeting her eyes.
"Adam, of course I'll do it. If it means you don't go back to jail, I'll do anything. I'm sure it's going to be a bit uncomfortable talking about it, but I'll do it for you," she says.
"Thanks darling" he responds while pulling her into a hug and kissing her forehead.

They head to bed early that night, both trying to mentally and emotionally prepare for tomorrow. Adam texted Kev and asked if he would come to the hearing for support and Kev immediately said yes. He had a text from Hailey asking if he was doing okay and if he needed anything. He felt weird answering it while laying next to Kim. It was awkward when Kim found out about the two of them, he should have told her himself, but then again it's been awhile since they were officially together. He finally dozes off.

They wake up sometime later to Adams cell ringing, it's Hailey.
"Hello," Adam says sleepily. Kim turning over in the bed. Adam reaches for her hand.
"Hey Voight told us about the character witness, I just wanted to see if you wanted me to come," Hailey says.
"I asked Kim to be the witness," Adam says
"Oh that's fine. Makes sense," she says.
"It was Voights idea because of our history and her still willing to be responsible for me," he explains. "You can still come to the trial, but it might be a little awkward" he adds.
"Of course I'm coming, I still care about you Adam," she says.
"Thank you," He replies.
"Well I'll see you later," she says and he hangs up.
"Everything okay?" Kim asks.
"Yeah, I think this just got more interesting, Hailey is coming," he says.
"Oh okay" Kim says as she pulls her hand away and rolls back over.
"Kim.." he starts.
"Adam I'm tired, just let me sleep a little longer" she says.

He doesn't argue and decides to go out to the couch and watch some TV. He lets her sleep for another before waking her up. He's almost afraid to leave her apartment, that this trial is going to change whatever is happening between them. He wants to explain that him and Hailey are over.

"Kim, darling, it's time to wake up" he says.
"Mm okay," she says opening her eyes. She wants to fight waking up but then she remember the trial and immediately gets up. She follows Adam to the table where he already has breakfast.
"Guess you didn't go back to sleep," she comments.
"No I couldn't fall back asleep. Kim just so you know, Hailey and I are done. Yeah I was into her but it was different. It wasn't going to last," he explains.
"I understand. I guess since you two kept it a secret for so long, I'm just a bit worried," she says.
"There's nothing to worry about," he says with a smile.

They finish breakfast in silence and get dressed and head to the trial. Adam is nervous, not sure if they'll let me go or make an example of him. Meanwhile Kim is nervous she's going to have to explain calling off her engagement to a court room full of people and her co workers..
