CHAPTER 6

"Dylan! Sweetheart hurry up or you'll be late for school!" JanDi called out. Winter had started and though snow was yet to arrive, the winds were freezing. JanDi had managed to get warm clothes for Dylan while she wore an oversized coat that fell till just above the ankles.

She was cold...but she was happy. Dylan was going to start 1st grade and even the harshest winter, couldnt diminish the happiness on his face. He was finally going to be a big boy. He held on to his mother's hand as they waited to cross the road. Mother Nature was feeling bitchy and the wind began to blow. She rubbed her hands together, they were red and raw. She had used her own gloves to make mittens for Dylan. She watched as a woman got into a Volvo with her two children, driving them to school while she waited for the bus to take them to the subway station from where she'd take a train and get Dylan to school and would herself go to work.

Little did she know that a certain ignorant man was watching her from the black SUV parked a short distance away.

"JanDi?" A sweet voice whispered in her ear. She jumped and turned to find Changmin smiling at her.

"Changmin! Ah...anneyeonghaseyo" she greeted.

"HYUNG!" Dylan squealed excitedly. "Im starting 1st grade today!"

"Really?" Changmin grinned and patted his head. "You work hard now." His eyes softened as he surveyed JanDi. Her brown eyes watering from the wind, her cheeks pink and her lips blood red. A vision of beauty.

"Let me drop you to school today." Changmin offered.

"No its alright." JanDi said abruptly. Changmin didnt mind. He knew why she was being defensive.

"He wont say anything." Changmin said seriously.

"He doesnt need to. Just the look he gives can fill volumes." JanDi said fiercely.

"I want to see Appa." Dylan frowned.

JanDi sighed. SHe couldnt...she just...couldnt!

"Please Umma?" Dylan's big eyes fixed on her.

"Fine." She looked at Changmin and as Dylan raced to the SUV, Changmin held her hand. Squeezing it gently.

"It'll be okay. I promise." His hot breathing in her ear warmed her.

"Waaah~ I like what youre wearing Appa!" Dylan was elated to be seated next to his dad. "Appa...why didnt you come to see me again?"

There was an awkward silence.

"He's a busy man. He doesnt have time Dylan." JanDi refused to look at him.

"Yeah Dylan...if youre busy you make alot of money and then you can wear nice things." Yunho narrowed his eyes.

"Hyung." Changmin warned. JanDi ignored the quip. She was far too used to Yunho's cruelty. She glanced down at her own ragged boots and her eyes lingered for a moment on Yunho's shiny black branded shoes. He had no right to say she didnt work hard....she worked harder than he did. Only she had real jobs...not hours of being spoiled and pampered.

"So...where are you going to?" Changmin tried to make conversation.

"I have work..." JanDi mumbled.

"Oh. Thats nice. Where do you work?"

"I work as a maid."

Yunho burst into laughter. "A fitting occupation indeed."

"Atleast I earn money with my blood sweat and tears. Unlike you, I dont need to whore myself out to the general public." JanDi scowled. She hated being made fun of, especially by Yunho. She asked the car to be stopped, grabbed Dylan and began to walk away.

Her eyes stung as her grip on her son tightened. She didnt ask for this! She didnt have an option like he did and yet here he was being as scornful as ever!

"You hate Appa ne?" Dylan asked in a small voice. JanDi closed her eyes and knelt before him. She kissed his cheeks.

"You dont have an Appa sweetheart. Im you Umma and you Appa!"
