“Happy Birthday Dylan!” Lana greeted cheerfully as she placed a huge chocolate cake infront of Dylan. His black eyes sparkled with happiness. The little table in their house was laden with food his mother had spent all day preparing and the expensive stuff was brought by Lana.
“So what are you guys going to do tonight?” Lana asked. She was about to go to America for 2 days so she wouldn’t be present at night time.
“Umma said we’d go watch the fireworks at Charlone.” Dylan tweeted happily. Charlone was a club located in the most posh area of Seoul and every year a festival was held over there and it had the most spectacular firework’s display ever. However you could only get in with an invitation which was only handed out to the most elite class. Lana frowned. How was JanDi going to manage?
“He loves the display….I’ll think of something.” JanDi’s sad eyes looked even more miserable. While other parents gifted their kids cars and expensive toys, JanDi wasn’t able to get him anything more than clothes. Those too from a 50% off sale. But she was determined to make this birthday special. Lana could only wish her luck.

JanDi and Dylan sat on the wet grass, waiting for the firework’s display to begin. JanDi’s eyes glanced at the luxury cars that rolled up infront of the entrance to the club. Beautiful girls slipped out in their sleek evening gowns with handsome men in their tux. They sat on the garden outside the club but from where they would be able to see the display.
“Isnt this fun?” JanDi asked as she opened up a can of juice for Dylan.
“Umma…we’re not even inside!” Dylan whined.
“Im sorry sweetheart. Mommy doesn’t earn as much as all those people so she wouldn’t be able to get you in this year. But don’t worry, I’ll save up and next year you’ll be inside having fun and then you can rub it in those bullies faces.” JanDi tried to appear bright but she felt angry at herself inside. What kind of mother couldn’t even make her child’s birthday special!?
“Its okay mom…as long as Im here with you.” Dylan smiled as he rested his head in her lap, letting her stroke his hair.
“Who goes there!?” A deep angry voice shot out through the darkness.
JanDi’s heart sank as the police officer made his way towards them. She got up and brushed the dirt off her back.
“Hello Officer…is there a problem?” JanDi tried to sound like she knew what she was doing but she was terrified.
“What are you doing here ma’am? This is a restricted area. No trespassing.” The officer was a man in his thirties, glaring at her sternly.
“Oh…” JanDi inched closer to the officer. “Im really sorry but today’s my son’s birthday and he really wanted to see the firework display. I promise we wont be long. Just a little while please?”
“Im sorry. I cant allow that. You need to leave.” The policeman grabbed her arm in an effort to drag her away.
“Umma?” Dylan’s voice piped up behind her.
The police officer’s eyes lingered on the child before turning to her.
“You know trespassing is punishable by jail right?” he asked.
JanDi was trembling in fear as the officer’s grip on her arm tightened. What did she get herself into?
“But I’ll make an exception for you.” He continued.
