A long time ago, Jackson Rathbone posted a poem online which I wrote a response to. The original poem is the property of Jackson Rathbone, the response is all my work.

Statue by Jackson Rathbone

She dances in the forest shade

in freckles of the sun

slight winds breach the trees’ blockade

and the shade succumbs

A sudden burst of brilliant light

the forest comes alive

illuminating scattered paths

where forest creatures hide

She, revealed, a statue

bleaching in the sun

her skin of stone

a marble tone

her dress a mess

of vines and nests

a kind distress

her mouth

smiles

yes

for a statue

no less

for the trees

leaves dancing

in season

and reason deceived

as she seems to be

dancing, dancing for me

what shadows might allow at night!

when branches dip and sway

the disco moon, a trick of light

she sways on nature’s stage

her holly golightly gave her the reds,

my james dean savior will see me dead

bowing to the inscription a questioning sigh

could something less than rain make a statue cry?

Statue (A Response) by Lily Crussell.

I was dancing in the forest shade

Hid from your mortal sun

I heard your whispered serenade

And found myself undone

Blinded by your brilliant light

Sleeping limbs came alive

Until the encroaching night

And all the stars arrive

He, revealed, a living man

Brightened by the sun

The sweetest call

A Texan drawl

Eyes of green

Of things between

Barely gleaned

His mouth

Utters

yes

No

Rest

For a man

No less

For an artist

Songs to be sung

Unwritten yet

Muses fleeting

And he seems to be

Singing, singing for me

When my limbs are stilled at night

When strings are plucked and played

His magic brings immortal light

And darkness is betrayed

His Buddy Holly chords gave me sway

My marble limbs enticed him to stay

I become immobile again with a sigh
