Friday, game day. I roll out of bed and turn off my alarm clock before it even goes off. I always get up earlier than intended on game days. The excitement makes me do that, because trust me, on regular days, I press the snooze button about five times prior to getting up.
After my shower, I put on my jersey and jeans with my black converse. I apply some cologne and comb my hair before packing my gear into my bag. First game tonight, I am so stoked.
I walk into the kitchen and grab an apple from the basket that sits on the counter. The juice from the apple filling my mouth as I bite into the crisp deliciousness. I hear light footsteps coming out of the hall, and turn to see my mother groggily dragging her feet into the kitchen.
"I am sorry I didn't wake up to make you breakfast sweetheart. It was a long night." She says and I can tell it was. Her eyes are puffy and red with dark bags underneath them.
"Na, it is okay mom." I say, holding up the apple. "This is good. Are you sick or something?"
She wipes at her eyes and gives me a faint smile. "I am okay. Ready for your game tonight? I met Scarlett's brother last night by the way, he seems sweet."
"You did? He must have come in after I left, but yes he is pretty cool. Takes really good care of Scar after her parents died last year."
My mother begins coughing up a lung and bends over her waist. I put the apple down and rush over to her and tap on her back, holding her steady with my other hand. She stands back up straight, clearing her throat and bringing her right hand over her chest, her eyes now watery.
"Thanks honey. Sorry, must have just got something stuck in my throat. So how about that game?" She changes the subject and I study her for a second making sure she isn't pale or anything. I think she may be coming down with something, her glowing complexion has faded.
"I am ready for the game, of course ma. I better get to school though before I am late, love you." I bend down and kiss the top of my mother's head before heading out.
I lean against the wall outside of Mr. Edwards English class, with my left leg propped up with my foot on the wall and my arms folded over my chest with my book bag hanging from my left shoulder. I glance down the hall to the left and still don't see Scarlett, until I look to the right and see her walking towards me with the most angelic smile.
My cheeks heat up as I flush and gawk at my girl. Her long brown hair is in a ponytail with a ball cap resting on her head. She is wearing her jersey with tight black pants, converse, and her infinity necklace hangs from her neck where it always is. Her hazel eyes are brighter with the black eye strips she is wearing on her high cheek bones for her game day spirit. Not that her eyes are ever dull, but they do stand out more with those on. God, thank you for spending time on this beautiful angel you have sent to me. I say silently, looking up to him and then back to her.
