"Martha, are you sure it's a good idea to tell your mother?" Ollie questioned, as they walked through her front garden. They had only been going out for two days at this point.
"No, of course not," she replied, "There's a lot we're risking here."Martha didn't mean to sound dramatic, but there really was a lot they were risking. They could lose their friendship, their relationship, and everything they've worked on together since they were young.
"True, true," he responded, "However, it's bound to come out eventually, so why not clarify it sooner than later?"
"Exactly," Martha nodded. Some things were worth risking.
"So, what's the plan?" He asked, as they stepped inside her house (which, by the way, looked like one of those pretend rooms from IKEA.)
"You stay here while I go and speak to her. When she realises, come in and we'll take it from there." Martha explained, "Understood?"
"Understood," Ollie nodded. There was no going back now.
Mrs Fitzgerald was replying to a work email when Martha came into the study.
"Hello, darling," her mother greeted her, "Did you have a nice day at school?"
"I did," Martha answered, sitting down next to her. "Mother, I need to talk to you about something. It's quite...,"she tried to find the right word, " unexpected, but also important, so I require your full attention." Mrs Fitzgerald closed her laptop.
"Go on," she prompted. Martha took a deep breath - this was it."Mother," she began, "I have a boyfriend."
“i have a boyfriend” ~ the four words every parent either rejoices or dreads. For Mrs Fitzgerald, it was the latter. She froze in her chair. Her own daughter, in a relationship? Her face turned pale, partly in shock and partly in denial.
"Who?" She inquired, her voice shaking. “Please don't let it be Rufus,” she thought, “Anyone but Rufus.”
"Well," Martha responded (she was beginning to enjoy this a little too much), "You know how Ollie's my research partner?"
Realisation dawned on her mother's face.Right on cue, Ollie walked into the room.
"It's true," is all he said, but even that was too much for Mrs Fitzgerald.
"Can I speak to you? Alone?" She asked, gesturing at Ollie. He nodded, and Martha went upstairs.
"What's all this rubbish about Martha being in love with you?" She demanded, folding her arms.
"It's quite simple: she told me she loved me; I told her I loved her, and now we're going out," Ollie finished.
"If this relationship nonsense affects her grades, you will both be in serious trouble," Mrs Fitzgerald said,"Do I make myself clear?" Ollie nodded and ran upstairs to Martha's room."What did she say?" Martha asked, not even a moment after he had opened the door.
"That we can go out, but if it affects your grades, then we'll both be in serious trouble," Ollie quoted.
"Well, I don't see any chance of that happening," Martha stated.Luckily, Ollie's parents were a lot more accepting.
"Are you two planning to go on study dates like your father and I did?" Mrs Coulton asked.
"We're still thinking about that," Ollie responded.
"We'll leave you to it then," Mr Coulton replied, "Those emails won't write themselves!"A/N: posting it a day early this week BC I'm going to a sleepover😀😀
