"It's good you'll be shifting soon, it'll certainly help us in competitions." Jade was a half glass full kind of person.
"Well if my father's shift is anything to go on, I will literally crush the competition under giant wolf paws." I made the action of slamming my fists against the desk in class.
The teacher motioned for us to quiet down and I gave a mock nod of understanding his way.
"What's a few broken necks or two?" She shrugged with a fanged grin.
"A good feed to you." I smirked.
"True." She nodded, her silky raven hair bobbing as she did so. "So, my family's having this ceremony in a few months time, would you like to come?" She offered.
"A chance to dine with the most affluent Vampires in this Realm? I might need to check my schedule." I jostled.
Jade laughed and dimples pierced her porcelain cheeks. "Your whole family is welcome too, but of course I invite my best friend first." She handed me an envelope bursting with invitations from her desk.
"Thank you, I will definitely be there in my finest robes." I put on a pompous accent. "Do I want to know what the ceremony is for?"
Jade shrugged. "It's just some ritual my family has practiced for centuries. It's basically a coming of age ceremony for one of my cousins. I'm only excited to go for the food."
"Food, the only redeemable quality for obnoxious family events." I completely understood where she was coming from. I had lost count of the events I had gotten dressed up for over the years, events that really could have been settled in under an hour but went for twelve for dramatic royal effect. Royals loved to make a big deal out of nothing.
"Oh, and bring a date." She added.
My smile grew tense as I looked down at the envelope in my hands. There was only one person I would've liked to go to the ball with, but facing my biggest fear wasn't on my to-do list.
Alick
The sun travelled from east to west as April and I breezed through the list, each distant Byrne relative or person who happened to be given the name Brigid knowing nothing about the fire that burned in his or her veins.
"Fuck!" April slammed the door of the last person on the list hard in his face. "How can no one know anything?" She knotted her fingers in her glorious red mane.
"Well, you did kind of kill a lot of your closest relatives after your coronation and Conan and your grandmother died of natural causes-well, natural for Vampires anyway." I reminded. "Basically, there is no one alive from your past that could possibly know anything-because their dead."
April turned to look at me, her brows furrowed. "From my past." She repeated under her breath.
"I sense an epiphany." I could just picture the cogs in her brain working up a brilliant plan.
"My father is dead. But he had a brother, I only remember hearing about him once." I was proven correct.
"Where did he live?" I prompted.
"Yorkshire."
"We better go in the morning." I wrapped my arms around her waist, seeing as she had calmed down considerably.
"No, I won't risk not being there when our children shift." She toyed with a lock of my hair. "I promised Isla."
"We promised." I corrected, leaning in to capture her lips with mine. It had become quite rare for us to find times of quiet and peace to be together and I was going to take full advantage of the fact.
