"Let's go munchkins!" Stella shouted so that all the residents of the house, and quite possibly the neighbors as well, could hear her. Many feet could be heard making their way down the stairs quickly and finally revealed the pouting faces of the rest of the Nouveaux family.
Stella's dad had already gone to work, leaving her the responsibility of taking her three younger siblings, Sabine, Soleil, and Sidney, to elementary school, middle school, and high school respectively. The three of them sat at the breakfast table in a flurry of motion, all elbows, backpacks, and plates full of food.
Sabine was the youngest at five years old, and she was also the quietest and the most well-mannered, whereas Soleil and Sidney loved to argue about anything and everything, four years apart at thirteen and seventeen. Stella was the oldest and didn't bother getting between the two of them because years of experience had led her to believe that she'd only make it worse, but she walked over to sit beside Sabine and made sure that she ate her breakfast with all the commotion going on.
Stella didn't live in the house with them, but she spent most of her time there, taking care of them. Soleil and Sidney noticed her movement and looked at Sabine before glaring at each other, but bringing their voices to an almost "indoor" level. The three older kids didn't have much in common besides their looks, but one thing they were all very strictly set in their ways about was that nobody messed with Sabine, not even them. She was the angel of the family and they were all nuts about her.
Sabine was the only one of the kids that didn't look like a carbon copy of the other. Where the three of the older siblings all looked like their father, brown-haired and blue-eyed, Sabine looked just like their mother with her gorgeous platinum blonde, almost white hair, and green eyes. The kids' mother had died shortly after giving birth to Sabine, and she happened to inherit many of the same qualities such as her quiet nature, which they were all determined to preserve.
Stella smiled gratefully at the two of them and they kept their mouths shut by shoving scrambled eggs in them. She kissed Sabine on the cheek and allowed her to feed herself while she had the other two watch her, moving into the kitchen to clean up the mess from breakfast and from making their lunches.
"Done!" Soleil yelled as her face appeared in the kitchen, carrying three empty plates and cutlery. Not one of the kids grew up to be lazy, and they all pitched in with the chores, which is why Soleil immediately took up doing the dishes, and Sidney could be spotted taking his sister out of her seat and cleaning her up, as well as the table.
"Okay, leaving in..." Stella leaned back to check the time on the microwave. "Five, leaving in five. Leave the dishes, Sol." She told her, tossing her the towel but she disregards her older sister and quickly finishes up, sending her a winning grin which she can't help but return. Stella didn't know what she would do without those two stepping up to help.
Sidney helped Sabine into her too-big backpack that absolutely dwarfed her before slipping his own onto one shoulder; Stella had to refrain from rolling her eyes. Soleil followed closely behind and they all slipped into their shoes quickly, a tangle of unbalanced limbs before Stella threw open the door, grabbed the keys, and lead them all outside.
Stella grabs Sabine's hand after she locks the door, and she walks with her to the car, buckling her up into her car seat as the other two do the same. Although Sidney is older, Soleil gets her turn up in the passenger seat today, which has her beaming. Sabine and Stella are quiet as usual as Soleil turns up the music and she and Sidney sing along obnoxiously.
First stop is Sabine's elementary school, she's in Kindergarten. Stella leads her into the brightly lit classroom, decorated with a hilarious amount of the children's drawings and other crafts. Small tables and chairs are neatly placed around the room and she smiles, squatting down, and hugging Sabine before she leaves.
