Gentle waves rolled in, breaking on the Fimmirran beach and shifting the black, volcanic sand into subtle and haphazard patterns. Reane's fingers moved with a restless, absent purpose as they shifted several maps and documents related to the mission lying at her side. But while her hands were active, her eyes focused on nothing from her perch in the abrasive soil.

The fading light forced her to give up trying to read them. Instead, she stared out across the ocean as her thoughts wondered. Despite no real control over them, they seemed to focus with an annoying repetitiveness on why she always wound up looking like a fool in love.

Mesmerized as the small swells of waters came up to her feet and then receded, she didn't even recognize Brentai's presence until her First Mate's voice brought her back to the moment.

"I figured I'd find you here. When you didn't show up at the banquet for King Turon's new ambassador to the Elves, I got a little worried. Especially when we're setting sail in the morning."

"I keep thinking I was wrong to bring Sheala here and get her involved." With a downward laden tone in her voice, Reane contemplated every action she had taken since meeting a certain young thief not all that many years ago.

"Sheala's a grown woman. She made these choices herself."

Reane smiled, suppressing a laugh that struggled to be set free at his comments. "Brentai, are you forgetting who you're talking too? I held her hand the entire way, poking and prodding her to this end."

"And why's that?" Her first mate took up a seat on the beach next to her.

Reane was silent for a second before answering. "Remember how I always told you I couldn't change the future?"

"Yes. I'm sure if you could have saved your father you would have."

"Well, what I said as not entirely true."
