Does it have to be so cold?
Shivering, Breeze wing fluffed up her feathers against the frigid winter air. She and the rest of the pack had left their temporary camp in the cave and, following Ivyleaf's vision, were now moving east, toward the rising sun. Glancing over her shoulder, the pegasus caught sight of Ember and the others a short distance behind her. With a start, she realized how weary they all looked; their ears drooping and their wings beating slower than usual. They'd been flying for nearly the entire day, the thick clouds and jagged mountain peaks obscuring any possible places to rest. Breeze wing halted, hovering in the air as she waited for her companions to catch up, and twitched her ears worriedly. She was used to flying long distances without rest, her former herd's yearly migrations and her huge, strong wings allowed her to be able to fly for up to two days without needing to stop. We have to find somewhere to land soon. She thought, If we don't, wings are going to start giving out. Her mind made up, the gray mare flew back to Ember. The she- wolf looked utterly exhausted, and her eyes kept drooping shut. "Ember?" At Breeze wing's voice, the alpha's eyes flew open and her head jerked up, her wing's stalling momentarily. Steadying her friend, Breeze wing felt her stomach lurch with worry. "I'm going to look for a place to stop for the night. Don't try to stop me," she added as Ember opened her mouth to protest, "Everyone's tired, but you're exhausted. If you go any further, you're wings are going to give out and none of us want you to get hurt." Closing her jaws, Ember nodded, "Alright Bree." "I'll be quick." Folding her wings, Breeze wing dove through the thick cloud cover, unfurling her wings and leveling out once she had passed it. Hovering, the pegasus scanned the terrain below for even ground. Finding herself over a forest, she glided around until she found a clearing not far from where she's come out of the clouds. Satisfied, she rocketed back to Ember and the pack. "Ember, I found a spot not far from here. It's a forest clearing." Ember glanced at her, her eyes glazed with exhaustion, and opened her mouth to reply. Abruptly, the she- wolf's wings gave out and she began falling to the ground. "Nope!" Diving sharply, Breeze wing swooped under her friend and caught her on her back just as the canine entered the cloud cover. Hearing the pack's frightened voices, the mare beat her wings and burst back up, Ember lying limply on her back. "Ember!" "What happened?!" "Ember fell out of the air!" "HEY! EVERYONE CALM DOWN, EMBER'S FINE!" Releasing a deep whinny, Breeze wing quickly hushed the pack. "She's just exhausted." Once she could make herself heard without screaming, Breeze wing continued, "As we all are. Now, I found us a place to rest for the night. Follow me and then you can rest." Wincing slightly, the mare glanced sheepishly at Blazing star, the beta of the pack. To her relief, he nodded, "Thank you, Bree." Whisking her tail, Breeze wing led the pack through the clouds and into the forest clearing below.
Minutes later, Breeze wing was lying on the ground with the rest of the pack pressed around her in a warm, snoring pile of fur and feathers. Hearing soft voices, the pegasus looked up to see Imp, Aleyda, and May huddled together a short distance away. Carefully, as to not disturb anyone, she rose to her feet and made her way over to the newcomers, her wings fluffed up against the cold. "Hey," She nickered as she approached the felines, "aren't you cold out here by yourselves?" Shivering, May looked up at the pegasus, "N- no. We're f- fine." She mewed through chattering teeth. Breeze wing gazed at the tabby queen, blinking in amusement, "Uh huh. Sure." "Come join our pack. You'll freeze to death out here alone." "Ah, but Aleyda and I-" "You and Aleyda are reapers, you're already dead. I know. Do you want May to turn into a block of ice out here in this weather, hmm, Imp?" Breeze wing queried lightly. "Er- no." The red pelted tomcat replied rather sheepishly. "Come on then." walking behind May, the pegasus nudged the she- cat to her paws and toward the sleeping pack, Aleyda and Imp following close behind her. Nosing May to the edge of the pack, Breeze wing folded her forelegs underneath her and lay down with the tabby huddled next to her. Beckoning to Imp and Aleyda, the mare draped a wing over them once the reapers had joined May next to her. "There. How are you feeling now?" "I suppose this is better." May murmured sleepily. "See? You don't have to be scared to join us." Breeze wing nickered softly. "Hello?" After a short wait, Breeze wing looked down at May, Imp and Aleyda, and her eyes shone when she found them fast asleep under her wing. "Heh, goodnight you guys." Nuzzling each of her new friends in turn, the mare lay her head over the back of one of her packmates and closed her eyes, "Thank you for trusting us."
