Alright, so I understand in this book I've painted cliches in such a bad way that honestly it might even come off as hypocritical, but I just want to make this clear.
NOT ALL CLICHES ARE BAD!
Every book has one and there are so many good and amazing books out in the world.
On wattpad, there are cliches of course, but they aren't used in a good way, (most of the time) so the book just seems cheap and crusty.
Compile that with the not so good writing lots wattpad writers have, and the unoriginality wattpad readers like then you have a substantial amount of terrible books that wouldn't get any sort of aknowledgment in the real world.A good wattpad book doesn't always mean its a good book to publish.
Generally, wattpad books are held to a far lower bar than a traditionally published, and why wouldn't they? Wattpad is a free site where teenagers and middle-aged/ married woman try there hand at writing a book. Which most of the time is there first.
Take Anna Todd for example:
She was just someone who loved to read fanfic on wattpad and decided to start writing just like most people on this site, and like most people on this site, her writing was pretty trash, but it worked out for her, lots of people loved the story and the plot that she got to publish it!
But let's say she wrote after and wanted to TRADITIONALLY publish it, she probably wouldn't. Because:
A. What she posted on wattpad was something lots of critics would probably shit on
B. Her writing wasn't as good as publishers would like so she would probably keep getting rejected and give up.
C. Its was a fanfic.
After is literally a Harry styles fanfic and from what I understand fanfics don't usually get published.
D. It's not the kind of books people wanted back then.
2012/2013 was probably a peak for dystopian, with the Hunger Games movies, maze runner, and The divergent series being immensely popular at the time, publishers probably only wanted to publish books in that genre to jump on the hype train.
And as far as I know, after doesn't fit in that genre. While traditionally published books have to have at least subpar writing, a good plot, and amazing storytelling for it to gain popularity. (Most of the time)
So the whole point of this chapter is to tell you to not be afraid to use cliches, every book has them, it's what helps a book. Just remember to use them the right way, because cliches can make amazing books if you put your mind to it.
