Something about this day makes me feel different. I can't get the jogge- Giovanni, out of my head. I keep flipping the business card in between my fingers, staring at those numbers. I've been doing this for hours. After a one-on-one debate with myself, finally, I grab my cellphone. I unplug the non-traceable plugin and dial the numbers.
"Hello?" someone answers.
"H-hi. Um, is this Giovanni?" I ask sweating.
There was hesitation.
"Heiress?" The enthusiasm in his voice makes me shiver.
"Yeah, hey. I was just calling to let you know that I was about to go get a cup of coffee at Mendel's. I wanted to see if you wanted to come with me actually."
I can tell he is in shock.
"Yeah, absolutely. I'll meet you there."
Oh gee...just great. I'm blushing.
"Great, see you there."
Once the call ends, I go brush my hair and put it neatly into a bun. I grab my purse and start out the door after reassembling my traps. I have never been this excited. Not even for a kill. I go to the coffee shop that is only about fifteen minutes walking distance from where I stay, and to my surprise, he was already there. He must have jogged. I walk in and he immediately stands up and pulls out my chair. After we both are seated he wastes no time thanking me for giving him a chance
"This isn't a date." I say looking away, and out the window.
"It is to me." He responds nudging my finger with his.
My face is tomato red at this point.
"Tell me about yourself." I say, just wanting to hear his voice.
"I'm 29, grew up an only child, was born and raised in Michigan, and I love to exercise and draw."
He continues, "I've never been in a relationship, but you intrigue me Heiress- though our first meeting was far from perfect. It's just something about you that tells me you're not like these other women."
I just listen to him talk, every word, so passionately spoken.
"So what about you?" I don't even realize he is addressing me at first.
I snap from my gaze, and simply ask,
"What do you want to know?"
He went on pause for a moment thinking hard.
"What do you do for a living?"
My heart sank. I have never been so ashamed of my profession. I wasn't paid for it but the satisfaction was just as good.
"I'm a cashier." I respond, surprised at my own lie.
Before he can ask more questions, I stand up gathering my things.
"It's getting late, I should probably head home."
I hadn't even had a cup of coffee yet.
"I'll walk with you. We don't need you pulling daggers on anyone else."
That comment made me laugh harder than I ever had before. Not because what he said was funny, but because that same dagger had found its way through the skulls of many people before him. We start down the street side by side. I can't help but look over at him. His hair the color of gold, and his big eyes and olive skin seem to gleam in the sunset. A massive dimple appeared when he smiled, and I realize that he has a Sweet Face.
"What's on your mind Heiress?"
I stop walking.
"Do you believe in fate? Like no matter what happens, people are going to get what's coming to them. And if it's not in one way, it's in another?"
His eyebrows lift at the seriousness of the question.
"Well..." He steps in front of me placing his hands on each one of my shoulders swaying me gently.
"That's a deep question. My personal opinion is that fate is only fate when we make decisions that will seal it. My faith tells me to jog every morning, to stay healthy. I sealed my fate when jogging led me to you. Had I ignored my fate of being an exercise junky..."
He paused hugging me.
"Then I don't think I would be here with you right now. Even if you were going to come into my life another way, there's no time like the present."
I gently pull back. God, he smelled good.
"You're smart Giovanni. A headache, sure, but at least that big head is used for more than holding the weight of all those curls."
He laughs like a crow's call.
"Thanks for the compliment, I think."
Before I knew it, we are back at my apartment complex. I stand on the steps and face him.
"I had fun tonight. Thank you."
He leans down and kisses my hand.
"The pleasure is all mine."
I walk into the complex feeling like I am on cloud nine. I stop day dreaming when I realize something else. He now knows where I live.
