"How is Lee doing?"
David didn't quite turn around right away. He was in the middle of doing- something- with an old text. Luke couldn't quite tell what it was but it was obviously something only advanced literariets could do. And of course, though he wasn't old, David had been an advanced literariet for at least three years now. He did take a moment to appreciate the lines of David's forward bent body. The curve of that furry ass was a thing of beauty.
"He's getting along fine."
"Can I talk to him?"
"No. He's - off somewhere. Lucky him."
"What happened?"
David let out a sigh and finished what he was doing, pressing his hand down on the book to keep it from floating away. He turned around to face Luke. David was just a couple of inches shorter, just barely noticeable really. But that was fine. Literariets had a semi-annoying habit of never looking anyone in the eyes. Apparently being the windows to the soul was too much for their kind to bear once they became initiated.
"Oh, you know. Some wise ass decides they're going to reanimate the corpse of Fatty Arbuckle and now we've gotta clean up some of the rooms where a 350 pound pinball of gluttony and avarice tried zooming through. So, typical day ending in y I suppose."
"Sorry to hear that. Anyone injured?"
"What do you want Luke?"
They hadn't always been so formal and impatient with each other. Luke had been quite fond of David when they'd met. Before his initiation, before his eyes had been changed by the Catacombs, he'd been so free and easy. Tempting. It wasn't just that he looked- well- delicious, Luke was vain enough to admit that was important to him, but he'd had a certain curiosity and hunger than Luke had enjoyed.
It made him think of Dean and the long weekend they'd had before he'd been taken by the Hunters.
But Luke wasn't going to think about now. There was no point to it. David had chosen the way of Literariet and that was a lifetime appointment. They were mortal, for the most part. But there were potions that extended their lives and made them fluent in dead and living languages. Without the initiation and potions, they'd have surely gone insane learning on their own.
And the catacombs themselves weren't bad. You had to know how to get into them but as long as you didn't mind traveling underground past caramel colored stone in dim fire light- you could navigate the whole of greater Los Angeles county if you wished. They lived here, all those who loved their cause, like some sort of secret society that had renovated old Native American canyon cities.
"What if I said I wanted an evening alone with you?"
Ah. David smirked a little, just a tiny little at the corner of his mouth. It was nice for Luke to know that he could still have some effect on the other.
"I'd say, you know how I feel about vampires and no."
"Come on. I had Glenn at my house. He's enjoyed my company."
"He's new. He'll get over it."
"You don't have any reason to fear me. You know that." Luke put his hand out onto David's shoulder and David didn't pull away too quickly but didn't allow himself to be romanced at all by Luke's touch. Pity.
A little bit of spark came out of David's fingertips to keep what he was working on pinned down. It bristled but the book calmed and he began to walk away slightly. Luke was flattered that he was obviously flustering David enough that David felt a need to move away.
"I'm busy-" David said as Luke followed.
"We're all busy. But I need your help."
David stopped, let out a little sigh and went to a nearby empty desk to sit on top. His makeshift cloak he wore down in the Catacombs didn't do much for his body but Luke had a good memory for that sort of thing. Furry in all the right places- the grip- the smile.
"Hello? Earth to vampire-" David said expectantly with loosely crossed arms.
"Right."
The whole of the Catacomb work areas like the one where David was currently in had shelves carved into rock. Books of all varieties were there, neatly cataloged and available for all Literariets at a moment's notice. There was a lot of activity with the place being cleaned up but even David had to admit that he had a hard time not just focusing on Luke when Luke was there. Though he was a vampire and technically fraternization was frowned upon- David had a lot of interesting memories with Luke that were- difficult to ignore. And though he was a Literariet- he was still human. Mostly.
Sitting on the desk put him in the perfect position and he soon found that Luke was squeezing into the space between his knees, forcing David to open his knees wider. Luke was getting a touch intimate with his thighs - but if David could ignore the stirrings that Luke was trying to create in his system to try to get back into his cloak- he could get this over with quickly.
Luke pulled an envelope out of his breast pocket. "I received this through my fan mail vetter. I can't identify the symbols-" he said.
They were ruby earrings and they did indeed have a small symbol etched into the gold fasteners. Luke had been keeping them in a stark white handkerchief so they didn't touch him and David kept a pair of golfing gloves with him for times like these. He looked over them with interest.
"Hmm-"
"Hmm?"
"Fascinating problem you have."
"You know what the symbol is?"
"Nope," David said, shaking his head and dropping the earrings gracefully back into handkerchief. "But you are not alone in this."
"Someone else has received something similar?"
"Yep. And he came to see me yesterday. You just missed each other."
"Well who?"
"You're not gonna like what I have to say." David's eyes just sparkled with the information.
"Well I prefer to know." Luke was feeling a little queasy all of a sudden.
"You need to go see Derek and Jean Luc."
Luke made a face and then tried to mask it with a sweet little smile smirk combo, putting his voice down low and conspiratorial. He brought a finger up against David's jaw line. "Come on handsome. You weren't even a little curious about the symbol? At all?" He positively crooned in David's direction.
"My boss is gonna get pissed off if I end up with a vampire in my room."
"Oh, I'm well worth it though."
"I know. But- you know my answer. I take my vows very seriously."
"Come on," Luke groaned. "Don't make me visit the wolves. You know how I feel about rock climbing."
"Then you'll never know the truth I guess-" David grinned and batted his eyelashes a little in Luke's direction.
