Hailey looked at me, staring into my soul with her dagger-like eye. I don't remember if 'Mr. B' had worn an eye patch or not. I only remember the paper he gave me, the offer he told me, and how he acted. I quickly tried to think of something to say, but Hailey's voice interrupted my thoughts.
"You forgot, didn't you?" She spoke, then sighed. Hailey then handed me a small piece of paper. It had numbers so I assumed it had to be her number.
"Call or text me once you find out, until then, explain the girl." Hailey took a glance at Charlotte, who was being entertained by Connie. I was hesitant to answer, but I know Hailey deserves the truth.
"When I first met Charlotte, she didn't talk. Then, I met her father. She was beat by him everyday, and when I found out, I acted. I understand bringing her here may have not been the best course of action, but I didn't want her to suffer from the hands of someone who should love her."
Hailey nodded in understanding, at least I hope it was understanding. She glanced over at Charlotte again.
"She can stay, but you are responsible for her until Connie or I trust her." Hailey's words brought me joy! Charlotte wouldn't have to suffer anymore. I thanked Hailey too many times. We checked in with Connie and Charlotte. Connie was reading a children's book titled "The Giving Tree." It was a short book, so Connie finished it quickly. Charlotte really seemed to enjoy the books Connie read to her. After about three books later, Charlotte's eyes seemed to slowly fall. She must be tired, she did stay up all night. At least, I think. I picked up Charlotte and set her down on the soft couch. A wooden chair is not made for sleeping on.
After laying her down, Charlotte wasted no time falling asleep. I pulled out my phone and checked the time. 7:12, school is going to start soon. I put my phone away and looked at Charlotte, then at Connie.
"So, why is she here...? I-I'm not complaining! I'm just curious..." Connie's asked. She had her hand on her arm.
"Her father was beating her, and I wanted to keep her safe. So I brought her here." I replied.
"Ya know, bringing her here may have been a mistake." A voice I didn't recognize said. It was a male's voice. I turned around and found a boy with a pirate eyepatch on. The eyepatch was clearly from a costume, but I'm positive it covered a missing eye. He had dark brown hair, a dark brown eye, and was wearing gloves.
"This school is dangerous, and having a youngster around can't be good. Teachers here would kill her if given the chance, not to mention a mistake could cost an eye." The boy said, he had a serious tone which gave me the chills.
"Maybe bringing Charlotte here was a mistake, but it's better than leaving her with an obvious pedo and abuser." I snapped back. Charlotte was not leaving, she'd be beaten more.
"That's not my opinion, I'm all for helping others. Just be wary of who you're helping." He said.
"Dustin, here, has a past with helping the wrong crowd." Hailey butt in. I nodded in understanding. I know everyone's got a past, but "Dustin" is crazy if he thinks I'm taking Charlotte back! My thoughts were interrupted by a voice.
"Code Blue! I repeat, Code Blue!" It was a males voice. Connie and Hailey began shushing everyone. A boy, I think the one who couldn't speak, ran over to the lights and shut them off.
Then, it was dead quiet and dark...
