I tried to pry the doorway thing open, but it wouldn't budge. I started screaming Connie's name, but I don't think she could hear me. On the other side, I'm positive I heard Connie screaming. After a couple of minutes just screaming for Connie and trying to open the door, an idea popped into my head. Hailey! She can help us! I crawled as fast as I could, desperate to still have time. Once I was finally back in the hideout, Hailey saw me and I could tell she could tell I was in need of help.
"Emily! What happened? Where's Connie?!" Hailey's questions saddened my heart, as I quickly tried to explain what had just happened. I included the whole "Dustin betrayal" and how I think Connie is in real danger.
"Oh my gosh..." Hailey muttered to herself, then she sprinted towards the exit and began to crawl out.
"Hailey, no! It's not-"
"Emmy?"
I turned around to see Charlotte, her eye was watery. I got down on one knee to match her height.
"Don't worry, Connie is just playing a game. But the game is kinda complicated so I rather you don't play." I smiled, trying to hide my worry. Based on her facial expression, I could tell she believed me. I gave her a hug and told her that Hailey and I are playing the game, and to stay with the other kids here. She nodded, so I'm trusting her that she obeyed. I flashed a warm smile before joining Hailey. The food, you forgot the food! Right.
"Charlotte! In case you're hungry, I brought a bag full of food! Share with everyone please!"
"Okay, Emmy!
I joined Hailey outside the hideout. She was crouched down at a bookshelf. I quietly but quickly crawled to her. She noticed me and gave me the hand motion to hurry up.
"You know, I'd rather you stay in the hideout. Keep everyone calm." Hailey whispered.
"Connie saved me, at least I think, and I'm going to save her!" I whisper-yelled.
"Shh! Be quiet or they'll hear us!..." Hailey slapped her hand on my mouth and her eye darted towards a direction when she said "they're". I nodded and Hailey removed her hand. I peeked my head over and saw Connie. Connie! Oh my gosh! She's bleeding! I stood up only to be pulled back down.
"Emily, listen to me. If we try anything, we'll be caught and killed. We have to wait." Hailey just stared at me while I blinked. I looked down and nodded my head. Connie... please be okay.
We shuffled closer and closer to Connie. She was unconscious and bleeding from her head. Hailey peeked her head over and reached for a book.
"I'll throw this to attract anyone, just stay quiet and when I say 'now', grab Connie and follow me." Hailey told me, I nodded in agreement. Hailey got ready to throw the book when she suddenly sunk back down.
"Emily, you throw it. I-I can't..." Hailey said.
"Why?"
"Because, Dustin's there..."
"So? We need to save Connie. Besides, he betrayed us..." I told Hailey. She took a breath, then threw the book. We covered our mouths as Dustin and a teacher I didn't recognized ran to the noise. "Now..." Hailey mouthed. I got up and ran to Connie. I managed to pick her and follow Hailey. We ran to the hideout. Just as we reached the entrance of the hideout, someone pulled me back. I dropped Connie which, thankfully, woke her up. I turned around and saw another kid, a boy I didn't recognize. So I kicked him.
Hailey helped me take Connie to the entrance, once there, Hailey went in first. Just as I was about to enter the hideout, I felt an arm wrap up my waist and a hand covering my mouth. Then I heard a whisper in my ear...
"Going somewhere~?"
