I shot down, and start to panic. I couldn't move, and Connie noticed my struggle.
"Breathe, and count to ten... Trust me, it helps. Just relax, and breathe..." She whispered. I took a deep breath, and I felt better. I counted to ten, and felt better.
"Thanks, but was that-" I was interrupted.
"Dustin." Connie and I looked down. I don't believe it. I stared at Connie, then mouthed "what now?" She paused, then turned to a door.
"You see that door?" She whispered. "Any food we have left is in there. We need to get to that door." Connie looked at me. I sighed and nodded.
"Got it, leave it to me. Just distract them and I'll get in there. I'll whistle to let you know when I'm done and I'll put my fist up to let you know I'm ready to go." I told the plan, Connie nodded and grabbed a book. She nodded, then I nodded, then the book was thrown. We peaked our heads and watched as the principal and... and Dustin, ran to the noise.
I ran to the door, trying to be quick. There's a lock? Connie didn't tell me about a lock, nor a code! Once I got there, I turned to Connie. She raised four fingers, then two, then five, and then one. So, 4, 2, 5, 1. That must be the code. I looked at the code lock. I took a breath and pushed the buttons. 4, 2, 5, and 1. Aha! It works! I gave a thumbs up to Connie. She, too, gave a thumbs up before chucking another book in a different direction. I quickly pushed the door open and walked inside. It was like a pantry, but bedroom sized! It had shelves with labels, and each shelf had a different type of food. Bags of chips to microwave dinners, candy and sweets to fruits and vegetables. I'm getting distracted. Okay, let's see...
I grabbed a bag on the floor and filled it with chips, some apples, crackers, some peanut butter and jelly, and some bread. I hope no one is allergic to nuts. Once I finished filling up the bag, I left the food heaven. Once outside, I shut the door and made sure it was closed and locked. I crouched down and glanced around, my eyes searching for Connie, and I found her. She changed spots, was breathing heavily, and had a book in her hand. I look at the spot where she was before, and Dustin was there, his eye looking all around.
I grabbed the nearest book and threw it. Thank goodness Dustin and the principal guy are zombies and are drawn to noise. Once they were a safe distance away, I whistled. Connie looked towards me and smiled. It wasn't a happy smile, it was more of a relieved smile, like in the movies when they smile and cry. I put my fist up and she nodded. We pretty much crawled our way to "book club". Once we were at the entrance, we heard a sound. Connie looked up and gasped.
"Red, the password is red. Let us in!" Connie said in a hurry. The passage opened and Connie pushed me and the bag of food inside.
"Go, get the food to the others! Now!" Connie said, her eyes grew watery. Before I could ask why, she shoved me into the small hole and closed it.
CONNIE!!....
