I stared in shock. I could not believe what I was seeing. There, on her eye, she had the schools logo or brand name branded on her! "Goran Trails Highschool" was branded on Hailey's eye! What the hell?! I turned to Connie and saw her look down. She held her bandana covered eye. The girl with the bun also pressed her hand on her eye area. I looked and saw a boy with dirty blonde hair cover his already covered eye and his mouth. In fact, everyone in the room all touched their eye area and some touched their mouths. Some looked as if they wanted to cry. I turned back to Hailey, she had already covered up her eye.
"For those of us who speak, we are silenced. For those of us who listen in, we fall deaf. And those who see something we shouldn't have, we are blinded." Hailey finished. What kind of school does this to students?! I was left with my mouth opened in shock. I couldn't believe my ma sent me to this, this, Hell on Earth!
I felt a hand on my shoulder. I spun around to find the blonde dude giving me sad eyes. Well, eye. He took a breath and opened his mouth. His tongue was gone! I couldn't believe what I was seeing! This school was not safe for kids. Once the boy closed his mouth, he looked down. I saw a tear fall from his not covered eye. I felt the need to hug him, so I did. He hugged back, sobbing into my back. Poor guy, poor students, poor everyone in this crazy school!
"Here," I turned and saw Connie talking. "We are safe. Safe from harm, from pain. Here we can be as loud as we want." She ironically whispered. I looked back at Hailey. She looked down.
"When you first came here, I noticed your lack of wounds. I saw that you weren't missing an eye or not talking. Now, it can stay like that. The teachers don't know where this spot is, and we'd like to keep it that way. You are free to come here anytime you want to, but you must know the password. It changes every week so listen up. For this month, the password with be colors. Each week, the password will change into a different color. This week's password is REaD" Hailey finished. She grabbed a piece of paper. The way she capitalized every letter but 'a' made me question it in my head. I knew the password was 'red', and I hoped the other kids would know as well.
After school, I rode the bus home. I plugged in my earphones and listened to music. After the ride home, I found I was the last stop on the bus. I grabbed my backpack that was seated next to me, and got off the bus. As I got off, I heard a voice behind me.
"Just remember, Emily. If you need a ride home, call me." He pulled out a sticky note and gave it to me folded. "Have a good day, kid!" He smiled at me. Before I could question the fact that he knew my name, the bus driver sped off, leaving me standing there in confusion.
I began walking half a mile home. As my feet each took a step, the thought of how bad the students were being treated made me upset. I just wanted to cry even though I have no reason to. Another recurring thought that popped into my head on the journey home was the fact the bus driver new my name. I wanted to wait til' I got home to open the note, but curiosity was one of my personality traits. I unfolded the small sticky note and what was written was to decipher while I walked.I stuffed the note in my pocket and continued walking home. Soon, my walk was over, and I was finally home.
I entered the house, making sure that if my parents were home they would know I was too.
"Hello, Em. How was your day?" I heard Ma's voice from the kitchen.
"It was fine." I dismissed quickly. Talking about my school day was the last thing I wanted, not to mention my mother promised me she'd pick me up. I walked to my room. The smell of something rotting hit my nose again and I grabbed my nose. Ugh, I hate this place. I threw my backpack on my bed and pulled from my pocket. Now that I wasn't moving and there was better lighting, I sat on my bed and read the note.
"Hello,
You do not know me, but Hailey told me about you, Emily.
If you ever need a ride to the school or home, I'll give you a lift.
Mr. B."
I turned the note over and found a phone number. So, Hailey told you about me? Hmm...
I picked up my phone and punched in the numbers. My thumb hovered over the 'call' button. After some time, I decided not to call 'Mr. B' since I don't know if I can trust him. Once I turned off my phone, my stomach brought me to a realization. I haven't eaten all day! I didn't get to eat lunch since I was scared that the lunch ladies had something in the food! I grabbed my phone, jumped out of bed, and ran to the kitchen to find something to eat. My ma was still in the kitchen, she looked like she was making dinner. I sat down at the table and started a conversation with my mother.
"So, book club?" My ma's voice was barely heard through the steams of the soup she was making.
"Yeah, every day, I might stay after school. Don't worry, there's a bus and I'll text you." I persuaded, trying to make my mother say yes. After a moment of her not talking I heard her say "alright, you can stay after school for book club,". I mentaily jumped in happiness, I'd get to hang out with Hailey and maybe Connie. I watched my mother take out three bowls and pour the soup into all of them. Then, she set oe bowl of soup in front of me, one across from me, and one on the side. She dropped a spoon into the bowls and walked down the hall towards her and my dad's room. Then, both of my parents walked out of the room and sat down to eat.
Once I finished my mother's delicious soup, I put the bowl away and thanked my ma. After that, I laid down on my bed and went on my phone.
I'll just ask Hailey and Connie about it tomorrow. I mean, he sounds friendly, but he could easily be faking it. After what Hailey told me, the only adults I can trust are my parents. After a couple of matching games and drawing in my Drawing Notebook, I grew bored. I checked the time multiple times. It seemed like the more I checked it, the less likely it would change. 6:34. Every minute seemed like an hour, and I became tired of seeing 6:34 on my phone. I hopped out of my bed and put my shoes on. I yelled to my parents that I would be outside, then left the house.
As I laid in the surprisingly soft grass, I heard a voice. I sat up and looked around. There, I saw my neighbor, the little girl. She had her hair up in pigtails. She smiled at me and waved. I waved back, trying to be friendly, when I heard another voice.
"Charlotte! What are you doing?!" The voice was a male's, it was deep and dark. If I was this little girl, I'd be scared too. I watched as 'Charlotte' scurried inside. A man poked his head out. Once his eyes saw me, his scary expression turned into a pleasant one. I have never seen this man before, since I left that one time when I did go meet the neighbors.
"Hello there..." I heard him say. His voice was unsettling. It was even more unsettling when this man began walking towards me, shirtless. My body immediately went into panic mode, and when my body is in panic mode, I freeze. There I was, as a pedo, looking man approached me.
"Where's your mommy and daddy?" The fact he referred to my parents as mommy and daddy made me panic even more. Without warning, the man sprinted towards me...
