Jhene POV:
Both Melissa and Kofi were talking to someone at the door, but I was too into my pizza to pay any attention to what they were doing. Nothing tasted better than pizza while drunk, nothing.
My head felt as light as a feather. But I also felt a little unstable. I had to pay extra attention when I was moving or else I'd either run into something or just trip over my own feet. This buzz was definitely making up for that bad trip I had earlier. Alcohol gave me more control over myself than shrooms did. Shrooms made me feel like I didn't know what was real or what wasn't. Alcohol just made me do dumb things but at least I felt like I had some control over myself.
My mouth was starting to feel a little dry. The wine bottle was next to me, I could easily refill my cup, but I decided that water would be better for me. The problem with drinking is you have to stay hydrated unless you want to feel like shit the next day.
"Kofi, where are y'all glasses," I stood up from the table slowly so I wouldn't get dizzy.
I turned to see what they were doing when they didn't respond. They were still at the door. Melissa had her arm around Kofi, as if to hold her back from whatever was on the other side.
I began walking closer to them. There was a tall man on the other side, keeping the door open with his arms. A lot of people are taller than me since I stand up at a little more than five feet. But this guy was taller than Kofi, and Kofi is pretty damn tall.
"Get out!" Kofi screamed at him as she tried to get around Melissa's hold. "Get the fuck out!"
Uh, oh. What the fuck is going on?
"Come on, baby. I know you miss this dick," the tall ass man slurred. Guess we weren't the only ones who had been turning up tonight.
As I got closer, I could see all the tattoos covering his muscular, light brown arms and neck that were exposed from his wife-beater tank he had on. He had a buzz cut and a small little beard growing. I would have found him attractive but considering how Kofi was screaming her guts out at him, she didn't like him. So, neither did i.
"Get the fuck out before we call the police, Chris!" Melissa yelled as she tried to shut the door with one arm while still trying to hold Kofi back.
Fuck, I had to do something before shit escalted.
Pulling out my phone and pressing it to my ear, I got to where the man, Chris, could see me.
"The police are on their way, they'll be here in 2 minutes," I said loud enough for all three of them to hear me.
Melissa shoot me a surprised, but thankful look.
Chris let go of the door, but not before saying, "I'll be back, Kofi."
As soon as he let go, Melissa slammed the door shut and locked it.
"Are the police really on their way?" Melissa questioned.
I shook my head, "No, I just figured that might scare him off."
"Thanks," Melissa sighed as she walked up to Kofi who had begun to chug the bottle of wine that was on the table, "Take it easy, Fi."
There was a plopping noise as Kofi removed her lips from the bottle, "We need more wine. We're out."
Melissa shook her head, "Girl, I think we've had enough for tonight."
This time Kofi nodded her head and plopped down on the couch, "You're right. We need something stronger."
"That's not what I meant," Melissa mumbled under her breath.
Hesitantly, I took a seat next to Kofi and gently placed my hand on her thigh, "You okay?"
Her eyes were watery and red. She began to nod but ended up shaking her head.
I didn't know what to say considering I had no idea who that man was to Kofi or why she was so angry seeing him. Instead of saying anything, I just pulled her into a hug. Her head rested against my shoulder as I rubbed her back.
"That was my ex," I heard her mumble against my neck. The vibrations of her voice gave my body goosebumps.
"We were together for two years and broke up about 6 months ago."
That I found interesting. When she had spent the night at my house, she had told me a quick rundown of her past relationships, but she hadn't mentioned any recent ones.
"He used to hit me."
My hand stopped at those words. That asshole hit her? Taking a deep breath in, I began to rub her back again.
"I was too scared to leave, but after I ended up in the hospital for the third time for broken bones, I moved in with Melissa."
Her voice was raspy from all the yelling but I was surprised she wasn't crying anymore.
I didn't know what to say. I was shocked. My heart was hurting for her. The fear she must have felt when she was with him. She must have felt that same fear tonight when he showed up at her door.
Melissa was cleaning up the plates and glasses in the dishes. She was rubbing extremely hard on the plates even though they were already spotless. I suddenly gained a lot of respect for Melissa in that moment. She really was a true friend to Kofi.
Kofi is too sweet, too good, too innocent to feel that type of pain. I wished I could take all the pain she was feeling away from her. But I couldn't. So instead I settled with giving the side of her head a gentle kiss and continued to rub her back.
