*Luke's P.O.V*
Avoiding his questions was no longer a possibility, Jake knew I was hiding things and I doubted he'd allow it to stay that way. He'd done enough to earn my trust by now so lying to him would be unfair.
"You said that he's been communicating with you, and according to what you just read it was through a diary. So what do you know that I don't?"
"Not much," I sighed, "I've only read the first two entries. The whole thing is terrifying, I know that for sure. He seems to be making it fairly obvious that we need to stop this Council and fast."
"I hate to say it, but that won't be as easy as it sounds," Jake mumbled. "They were undefeatable centuries ago, there's no guessing how powerful they would be now."
"He also said that... That I could defeat the undefeatable."
Jake laughed, his voice lacking any self control. "Yeah, I can imagine he would say something like that."
"Why?"
"Let's just say, Victor Humberg wasn't particularly known for his honesty."
I nodded, trying to appear somewhat comfortable with the situation. "Right, of course. So what do we do?"
Jake looked defeated, mirroring the way that I felt inside. As he did, I just wanted answers and for all of this to be over. Getting these answers was a whole different story, however. Telling all they knew to a vampire higher up the chain of command would be the only way to gather enough support, but they wouldn't appreciate any of what we would have to say to them.
"Maybe you have to read more of the diary entries to find out," he finally replied. "Have you got the book?"
I shook my head. "It's at home right now. I had planned to read more, but I guess I got a little distracted."
"Who by?"
"I never said it was a person," I frowned, attempting to read Jake's facial expression but failing miserably. "How did you know I wasn't talking about something else?"
Jake smirked, before bursting out into laughter. "Your face literally says it all, man. One minute you were totally concentrated and the next, when you started talking about this 'distraction,' it looked like your mind was wandering in dreamland."
My cheeks flared crimson, proving yet again how lame I was at being a vampire. I wasn't supposed to possess any emotion or display affection towards anyone, especially not a human, yet here I was blushing madly at the thought of Ashton. What was the boy doing to me?
Then, something suddenly changed. Jake's demeanour hardened and his posture became rigid, greatly contrasting to how relaxed he was only moments previously. "Luke, is this person someone you'd say you love?"
If my heart had been beating at that moment in time, I swear it would have stopped.
"No I- no he-" I muttered, not making much sense. "Ashton."
Jake's comment triggered an immediate reaction, my hand flying straight to my jean pocket and pulling out my phone. As a result of my trembling hands and clammy fingers I struggled not to let the device slip from my grasp, but managed to keep a hold of it.
I had a voicemail. From Ashton.
God, if I was too late I'd never forgive myself.
"Loud speaker," Jake insisted. "Please, Luke."
Knowing I had nothing left to hide from him, I nodded and did as he asked. When I pressed the play button I felt my heart sink deep in my chest.
"Hey Luke, it's Ashton."
Please, no.
"I-I don't know where you are or what you're doing right now, b-but I don't really care. You're the only one who can help me and I don't know what's going to happen next if you don't."
It must all be a trick, right? Ashton had never done anything to deserve the pain I could tell he was in now, from the crack of his voice and sobs that echoed across the line.
"P-please come Luke, I'm in trouble and I-I need you. I really need you."
And that was when I realised, I needed him too.
