Cassandra's Conundrum

Cassandra, love,
I pray you do not speak,
for only silence can assure
that peaceful sleep you seek.
Since all your prophecies are disbelieved,
perhaps the fools you strive to serve
are better served deceived.

If in your dreams
you see defense is black,
cry "White!" a thousand times,
that we may then attack.

And as for us, I pray,
you do not look at me and say,
"Our love will last eternal years,"
for words like that
are doomed to fall
on doubting and suspicious ears.
Instead just cast your gaze on me
and say that by divine decree,
our love will fail and cannot last,
that any good is now long past.

For in that lie
the gods will play their part,
and in that lie
your soul will gain my heart,
so I might finally wake and find
that you will be forever mine,
despite the gods,
despite the curse,
forever till the end of time.
