EMMA

"Detective Chamberlain, late again?" Sergeant Gerald Williams says as I try to sneak into the office to clock in.

"Sorry Sergeant Williams, but I did bring doughnuts," giving him a cheesy smile as he stands a few feet away from my office entrance.

He sighs, "Donuts won't always fix the problem, start doing better."

I nod, and he enters to grab a doughnut then walks away from my desk and out of my office. I've been working in the detective bureau of the LAPD for 2 years now, I have only ever really been late a few times; I like to think the sergeant is a little dramatic.

I enjoy my regular glazed doughnut and decaf coffee before I get started with going through case files. I've been partnered up with a few other detectives for cases, but for the most part I do more independent work, which I don't mind.

Specifically, I work in the Robbery Homicide Division, which covers ground for most homicide, robbery, sexual assaults, kidnapping, etc. As gruesome as it can be, I do love my job.

As I am rummaging through files, my door swings open and a voice makes me jump, "Chamberlain! Heard you got doughnuts, did you happen to get one for your favorite co-worker?" the voice says sarcastically, I don't have to look up to know.

Detective Ethan Dolan. I went through my associate's degree program with him, the police academy, we were officers together, everything and he still has managed to get on my nerves every step of the way; looks can be so deceiving.

"Good morning to you too, Dolan. Yes take a doughnut and leave," I urge to him.

"What's the rush? Hate my company? Wish my brother worked here instead of me?" He asks, knowing he is pushing all my buttons.

Ethan's twin brother, Grayson is one of my best friends but he is obviously one of Ethan's best friends too, which can make for complicated scenarios. I don't understand how Grayson is sweet, caring, not too obnoxious, but Ethan is 95% obnoxious.

"Ha ha, very funny," I mock him, "Don't you have a job to do and not sit on my desk?" I say hitting the side of his thigh to get off.

He raises his eyebrow, "I think the job description definitely included "Annoy Emma as much as possible", didn't you read it thoroughly?"

"If that's the case, maybe you do actually deserve a pay raise. I can put in a word for you to the sergeant," I smirk.

"Good one, I will let you be for now," he says exiting out the door, leaving me to my peace.

I can't believe I have put up with that for so long, imagine if I ever work on a case with him.
