Don't Go Changing

Simon was beginning to feel more and more like he was losing his mind.

He found himself pacing back in forth in front of his bed, unable to find stillness. He jumped slightly when he felt his cell phone vibrate in his hand, despite the fact that he had just texted

Maia and had anticipated a response. The text was fairly vague, simply saying, "SOS."

He knew he should probably text Clary, Izzy, Jace, or Alec about the situation rather than Maia who was probably more of a close acquaintance. However, Maia was the only person he was aware of who would actually take him seriously and not think he was crazy. He knew that if he told Clary she'd probably think he was having a psychotic break and tell his mom. If he told Izzy, she'd probably think the same thing and tell Clary. Jace probably wouldn't take him seriously at all and Alec would probably have him admitted to an institution himself. So, he found himself keeping a huge secret from his friends.

When he looked at his phone, he saw a response from Maia that said, "What's going on????"

Before he could even open his messages app, he was already receiving a FaceTime call from the other. He exhaled before answering it.

"Simon, what's going on? Are you okay?" she immediately asked, her tone concerned. She didn't bother with any type of niceties or unnecessary greetings.

Simon shook his head.

"I️ think I️ might be turning into a vampire," he said, his voice and eyes both filled with panic.

Maia gasped.

"Holy shit," she replied, still in partial shock.

Both she and Simon had only recently become aware of the supernatural, and neither of them actually really knew anything.

"Okay, I'm coming over there," Maia said after a moment of silence.

At this, Simon's eyes widened with panic.

"No! You can't! What if I'm dangerous?" Simon warned.

Maia shot him a glare that made it very clear not to argue with her.

"Simon? I'm coming over there," she said before hanging up.

Maia took a step closer to Simon as he paced back and forth in his bedroom. At that, he stopped dead in his tracks, putting out a hand in front of him.

"Stay back," he warned.

Maia flinched, slightly alarmed by the abruptness of his action.

"Simon, talk to me. What makes you think you you're turning?" she asked, trying her best to assess the situation.

Simon managed to put his arms back at his sides, but his hands were shaking. He was clearly distressed.

"Uh, Clary. She uh, she came up to hug me and then I️-I️...oh my God," he began, his breathing beginning to increase in speed.

At this, Maia rushed up to him, placing her hands on his arms.

"Simon? Simon, look at me," she said.

After a moment, Simon managed to lock his gaze into hers.

Maia nodded.

"Good. Now breathe," Maia instructed.

Simon began to shake his head.

"Simon, it's okay. Just breathe," she repeated.

Simon drew out a long exhale before inhaling sharply. At this, Maia began to instruct him to inhale and exhale, counting out his breathing with him until he seemed calm enough.
