How was he supposed to know how things would end? He couldn't.
That simple fact didn't help the situation at all, knowing that everything had been out of his hand - not reassuring in the slightest. Not at the moment, either. Because, while it wasn't directly his fault for Heiji getting the short end of the stick in this particular case, he was still indirectly involved in it; he couldn't have prevented his boyfriend from dying - that truly was out of his hand - but he shouldn't have encouraged it for him to get involved in the case either. Sure, when things got more dangerous he attempted to get him off the case, but at that point he was too deep into it to actually back out of the case.
And, as all things had to be, Heiji wasn't even killed by them; no. He had taken his own life. Committed suicide. However one might want to phrase it.
In short, he was captured by them. Set on to be interrogated, tortured and killed off. Not the best prospects, not at all - and therefore, he chose to end his own life, not wanting to endanger the mission and everyone that was involved, especially not people he loved. And that was it, Heiji just gone like that. Gone with the wind.
It was said that he was dead before his body his the floor. Not an image he would have liked to imagine his boyfriend in, ever, and yet a one that was just so very real.
