Elaina Michaels POV

It has been a week since I knocked Leo out and I have been avoiding him at all costs. He is the only person that makes me feel safe and that scares me. If I let my guard down to him, it only gives him a window to hurt me. Griff has already become like a brother to me. Over the week I have made some new friends due to Griff. My current friends consist of Griff, Matt, Cole, Nick, Lexi, and Jasmine.  Out of the girls, Jasmine is like my little sister (even though she is not younger than I am). I have a few more friends, but these are my closest ones.

"Girls, I'm throwing a party tonight and I don't want to be the only one attending," Matt says to Jasmine, Lexi, and I, leaning against my locker.

"Matty boy, every time you throw a party, the entire school attends. Trust me, you won't be the only ones." I say ruffling his hair.

"Layla, stop ruffling my hair like I am five. I am older than you are!" Matt huffs as I laugh. All of my friends call me Layla, including Griff.

"Okay, but don't let anyone sneak alcohol. I know you tried stopping them last time, but try harder this time." Jasmine said.

"Jazzy, he was the one who snuck the alcohol in last time." I laughed as I watched Jazzy start chasing Matt around yelling at him. Yes, I  have nicknames for everyone in the group and everyone calls me Layla.

"Well, I got to go. Max is hosting another party and he will tell me the deets in the Library." Lexi said flipping her hair.

"By Alex!" I laughed. Lexi hates being called Alex because she is a full-on girly girl and refuses to be called the same name as a boy. Lexi turned back and flipped me the finger as I kept laughing at her. It has only been a week and I don't know what I would do without these guys. I opened my chat to tell everyone about the party Matt is hosting.

Group chat between Giraffe, Nickey, Matty Boy, Coliza, Alex, Jazzy, and You.

You:  Guys Matt is hosting another party

You:  I'm not coming tho

Nickey: Rlly? He just had one yesterday

Matty Boy: Why are you not coming?😢

You: Sorry, I have stuff to do

Alex: No friend of mine is going to miss all of Matt's parties!

Jazzy: Layla, if I had to do it you do too. Just read in the corner.

Nooo. I can't come to the party. I'm not ready. Not after what happened last time. I let tears sting my eyes. Fact is my friends did not know what had happened last year. They thought I moved because my parents got a new job. I switched off my phone even though I could hear it ding.

Riiiiiiiing

Ugh, first period. I walked over to my AP Calculus BC class. Great, math. I tried listening to the teacher and taking notes throughout the class. I hated math, Environmental Science was okay, but I loved World History and English. World Language, well I could not speak other languages for my life so that kinda explains how that class is going. I could feel my eyes drooping and I could not focus anymore. So I raised my hand.

"Ms. Bergentine, I was wondering if I could get a drink of water?" I asked. When I feel extremely tired, I get a drink of water at the school water fountain, then splash my face with water.

A/N: I actually do this and it helps FYI, in case you wanted to try it. Sometimes our brains need a break, but not too long.

I finished splashing my face and went back to my class only to hear my phone ding. Shit, I forgot to silence it.

"Ms. Michales, no phones in class."

"I am sorry Ms. Bergentine, I forgot to silence it," I replied dropping my head.

"Well, I know you did not mean it, but it is class rules that if I hear it ring you get a detention. I can't bend the rules for you, even if you did not mean it, sorry Ms. Michaels." Ms. Bergentine replied. Oh shit. I felt so nervous. My first detention. No. What was I going to do. Calm down, Layla. I was so nervous for a simple detention, maybe I was a goodie two shoes.

"But Ms. I have practice. I can't come today." I replied. I know it was a lame excuse, but I loved track and the coaches were super strict about not coming.

"I guess tomorrow at lunch is fine as well." I sighed in relief. Then I looked around and realized everyone was staring at me. I quietly hid my face and a blush crept up my face. Talk about embarrassing.

I headed outside to where the track field was and quickly changed into my work out clothes.

"Layla! The snack bar is open today!" My friend Anna squealed. Once in a loooooong while (once a week), we get free snacks.

"Yes! Okay, Anne, be there in a minute." I replied. I changed into my track sneakers and headed to the courthouse where we all waited until track started. I went to the snack book and got some Cheetos there. I love Cheetos they are literally the best kind of toes out there. Weirdo.  Haha. Around 3:30 everyone started heading out to the track field and started our warm-ups: run 4 miles around the track field (I swear the coaches would kill the kids who walked, luckily I was in shape so it was not as bad for me). I love running, but long-distance (cross country) was definitely not the best out there. I preferred sprinting and hurdles like the one hundred, two hundred, and four hundred dashes.

By the end of practice, I was completely done and worked to my limits. I headed to the gym to do some work out exercises. I joined Anna and some other seniors doing core while playing music. We all chatted and honestly I loved the track environment here. Everyone was so friendly and funny, but also serious about their track. After the core and leg workouts, we all started chasing each other around the gym and attempting to see who can hold the longest foot shake record. By the end, I was laughing so hard and my voice was horse from singing along to the music so much. I texted my parents that I wanted to leave because I was tired and I had tons of homework left to do. I sighed and left for the main entrance to wait for my parents to pick me up. There were no showers in our school so was all sweaty. I was so caught up in track I forgot that I would have to tell my mother that I had detention. Knowing her, she would probably be proud that I was starting to "live life up". I am actually having a mental breakdown. I cannot believe it is my first detention. What is going to happen? Wow. An entire gang is after me and a detention is what I am worried about.

Honestly, I felt the same when I got my first detention freshman year. To be fair, it was because I forgot to return a laptop I borrowed from the school library twice. Soooo that was a stupid thing to get a detention for, but still. I was on the verge of tears and I have no idea how I got through attendance without crying. But it was not that bad, I did my homework and moved on. It was not like what you see in the movies with like all bad boys and everyone is bad and a trouble maker and wants to cause Mayhem, for those of you who have not had detention yet. Hope you enjoyed the chapter, it was a bit long, but I wanted to ease into the story so you could get to know Elaina a bit more.
