I wake up Monday morning to a rumbling crash of thunder. I groan, rolling over and checking the time to see that I'm already late for school. I sigh, pushing myself from the floor and looking outside. It's pouring rain, the sky looks like a fucking bruise and lightning flashes nearby. Great. Hopefully someone'll give me a ride.
I get dressed in my usual clothes, throwing on a beanie to keep my hair from getting too crazy in the high winds. I tie my bandana around my ankle, grab my switchblade and phone and off I go.
I knock on Carter's door about a million times, and eventually someone down the hall yells for me to shut up and I decide to just go inside. I roll my eyes at the sight of him passed out on his stomach with his blanket in a ball. I shake him awake, laughing at his tired expression and crazy hair.
"What?" he groans, pushing me away. "I'm sleeping."
"It's raining. You have to drive me to school," I order.
He groans again, turning to face the wall. "Make Dimitri do it."
"No."
"Why not?" he whines.
"Because he's not up yet and I'm not gonna wake him."
Carter stays silent for a few minutes, and I honestly start to get worried that he fell back asleep. Then, he sighs and rolls over again, making me smile in victory.
"Fine, let's go," he mumbles, rubbing his eyes and sitting up.
"Yes!" I exclaim, dragging him down the stairs because I'm anxious to see Jake. Even something as simple as a thought related to him ignites my insides.
"Okay, why are you this excited for school?" Carter wonders after I tell him to unlock the car door for the fifteenth time.
His words make me freeze. I had totally forgotten to hide my feelings. How did I completely forget that Jake's supposed to be my enemy?
"I just hate walking into class late," I lie, cursing myself for the slip. Even a split second mistake made him suspicious, so now I'm on edge. "Plus it's raining. So open it, you dick!"
He seems to buy it, finally listening to me and off we go. The entire time I have to keep reminding myself to stop tapping my foot and fingers. It's hard though, I just want to kiss those perfect, plump, soft lips.
Finally, Carter stops the car out front of the abandoned house like I instructed him to. Luckily, the rain had somewhat slowed so I should be able to stash my blade and get inside without getting too soaked.
"Thanks," I quickly mumble, opening the door.
"Whatever, weirdo," he replies, flipping me off lovingly (we're weird) as I slam the door.
I smile, jogging over to the infamous brick and pulling it out. I smile, seeing Jake's knife already inside. I got here earlier than usual, second period only just having started. An idea pops into my head, me not wanting to wait to see him and instead forming a plan. I rush inside, and once I'm under cover, I pull my phone out, texting Jake: Hey :) here early, meet me at the spot?
I figure that at this point I don't want to go to class, and if that means waiting there for him until the end of the period then that's what I'll do.
I take my time as I head down the hall, knowing it'll take Jake a while to even see my text. I bite my nails, smiling to myself as I think about him. We've had a few bumps along the road, but we hardly ever fight. Even if we don't see each other very often, when we do it's just...perfect. I've never felt "happy" before really. Content and excited, sure. Happy? I don't think I knew what that meant. Now though...it's all I ever feel. Even Dimitri noticed it. He called me out the other day for being so peppy in the mornings. As amazing as it feels to be like this, it's making people suspicious.
