Trigger warning: mentions of abuse, hospital, injuries
Virgil's POV
I woke up.
Where am I?
I heard beeping, but I couldn't open my eyes
My eye lids felt like they weighed tons
I knew I wasn't at school because I was on some type of bed and because of the beeping noise.
I managed to pry my eyes open, just to quickly close them because of the bright light.
Trying to get my eyes to adjust to the light, I heard talking.
I moved and made my presence known.
"Oh good, you're awake."
I saw a man, presumably the doctor with a women in a police outfit.
Oh no what did I do?
They are here to throw you in jail for breaking a law
What law did I break?
I don't know?
Then how do you know that I'm in trouble?
Because when are you NOT in trouble?
Fair point
The female police officer gave a small smile. She had dark brown hair that was pulled into a low bun. She had a dark blue almost purplish wings that when looking at them you seemed to calm down.
"Is it alright if I ask you a few questions?"
She didn't seem patronizing, she seemed truly interested in what I had to say. So I simply nodded.
She looked towards the doctor who nodded as well and left, closing the door behind him.
She then sat down next to me in a chair and pulled a notebook and pen out.
"My name is Annie, what's yours?"
"V-Virgil."
She smiled and started to write something down, anxiety started to bubble up. When she noticed my staring she started to speak, "don't worry about this. I'm just making notes for when I have to do the stupid paperwork. See."
She showed me and I saw that she wrote down my name.
"Can you honestly answer my questions Virgil? I'm here to help you."
"I-I'll try."
"That's good, that's all I'm asking. If you feel to uncomfortable just tell me and we'll move on. Do you understand?"
I nodded
"Great! Let's get started!"
She smiled at me showing her teeth and I couldn't help but give a small smile in return.

I ended up answering honestly. I don't know how. I told her about my wings and my parents. How? I've never told anybody about those things!
Though for once the voice was quiet.
Annie was outside of my room talking to the doctor again. She then left and the doctor came inside.
"Hello Virgil, I'm doctor Richard. You're lucky your alive, there was internal bleeding, broken bones and other things. We will be working with the police to arrest your parents and child services will come soon. But before that some of your friends have been waiting. Is it ok to let them in and see you?"
I was shocked and confused, what friends? My parents going to jail? Questions racing through my head.
"Ummmm, sure?"
He nodded, not saying anything on how I turned the statement into a question.
I was shocked when he came back with Patton, Logan and Roman.
Patton came rushing to my bedside, million questions flowing out of his mouth.
All of them stopped when they saw them.
The wings were bandaged and one was in a cast. They were propped, spread out behind me(I was on my side facing the door).
"You have wings?"
That was Logan, he was still by the door being the only one not rushing towards me.
I nodded.
Roman looked at me confused
"Why did you never say anything? Why let the bullies believe you had none, why let everyone believe that?"
I didn't know what to say. Do I lie? Say the truth?
"Look at t-them."
That's all I said.
They all moved closer towards them, I could hear Patton's small gasp.
"Who did this?" Patton asked, voice barely above a whisper.
"Who do you think?"
"Your parents?" Logan asked
I nodded.
The other two all gasped in shock.
Then Patton said something that shocked me,
"Can I touch them? Like groom them."
I nodded.
Grooming is normally something that is done by parents and people in relationships. I never really got my wings groomed as you can tell.

Patton's hands were soft and warm. He carefully moved the feathers from one wing back into the right spots. It felt so amazing! I noticed how touch starved I've been. I never wanted him to stop! I think I might have started purring or something like that, I was in heaven.

When Patton was done with the first wing he moved onto the other one. He tried his best to do it around the cast. It still felt great. He was so gentle.
After he was done with both wings and he removed his hand, I may or may not have whined at the post of warmth.
Patton moved to face the way I was laying, he sat in the chair Annie was previously sat in and he grabbed my hand in his.
"Is this ok?"
I nodded, not trusting my voice.
Logan went to talk to the doctor, Roman sat in the chair next to Patton on his phone. We sat in a comfortable silence, I don't know how long it was. Soon I felt my eyes slowly closing and I fell in a peaceful sleep.

Roman's POV
While we were waiting Logan started to work on our project, typical Logan. Patton's dad said that he needed to make a few calls after talking to the doctor(after he came back from taking the police officer to assumingely Virgil's room). I was trying to cheer up Patton, him being completely distraught from whatever he saw. It felt like hours before the police officer left and the doctor said we could come in.
Virgil was pale and seemed so small lying on the hospital bed. His dark brown hair was a mess, plastered across his pale forehead from sweat. He had horrible bruises across his face, black bags underneath his eyes. He looked like a zombie.
Patton and I rushed forward towards him. I wasn't really paying attention to the questions Patton was asking. It wasn't until Logan spoke up that I became shocked,
"You have wings?"
I looked up and actually saw them behind Virgil's back. One had a white cast on it, he must of broken it.
I was so confused, everyone thought he didn't have any, but he did. I decided to ask him, "why did you never say anything? Why let the bullies believe you had none, why let everyone believe that?"
Virgil looked like he didn't know what to say, then in a really small voice he replied with,
"Look at t-them."
I moved to get a better look, Patton following me. Logan moved closer to the bed as well.
I think we all gasped.
You couldn't really tell the color, scars, burns, patches of exposed skin littered over the wings. The feathers bending every different direction. They seemed smaller and weaker then they should, but considering no one at school has seen them I wasn't that surprised.
Though I became angry, who could do this to Virgil? Patton started to say something, in the softest voice I've barely heard and I was right next to him, "who did this?"
"Who do you think?" Virgil said, it wasn't angry or forceful. His voice seemed tired, like he had no energy. Logan spoke up this time, a question that seemed to be combined with a statement.
"Your parents?"
That shocked me, just as much as I noticed that Virgil nodded.
I was even angrier.
How could parents do this to their own kid?!
I almost didn't noticed that Patton asked Virgil if he could groom his wings, then once getting a nod in agreement, starting to work. I also didn't notice that Logan left the room, and I started to sit in one of the chairs. I was fuming and decided to look up online. Normally I could care less about research, but I needed answers.
I was so into searching online that I jumped in surprise to a hand on my shoulder. It was my mom.
I looked up to see Virgil asleep his hand in Patton's, Patton hunched over also asleep.
Logan was no longer here.
My mom gave me a small smile, "Logan's dad just picked him up"
"How did you know we were here?"
"Patton's dad called."
I nodded still slightly out of it.
"What's going to happen to Virgil?"
"Patton's Dad, Logan's mom and dad are working on it."
My dad was a lawyer, Logan's mom worked in child services, Patton's dad worked in foster care. All of our parents met along time ago, that's how we all became great friends.
"But right now, we should head home and you need to sleep. Your dad and I agreed that you don't have to go to school tomorrow if you don't want to."
"Ok," I yawned.
"Let's go."
I grabbed my stuff and headed towards my mom's car. We sat in a comfortable silence, the radio on a low level serving as background noise. When we got home, I headed to my bed and just laid down. To tired to do anything else.
I soon fell into the comfortable darkness that would lead to dreams.
