Epilogue | Year Two

Tobias

+++

We move to a house just outside the city. Outside, the cityscape of Chicago sits on the horizon, and stretches for miles.

We live alone in the neighborhood, for no one lives in the surrounding houses. Our closest neighbor, Trina and Mark, who we became friends with, live on the following street.

I sit on the roof, with my arms draped over my crossed legs, and face towards the setting sun behind the silhouette of Chicago. I look at the ring on my finger, and spin it around the width of it.

Suddenly, I hear the upstairs window open below me, and Tris pops her head above the rooftop. She smiles, then places both arms on the roof, and pushes herself up. I lean forward and offer my hand, but she refuses, and pulls the rest of her body onto the roof.

Typical Tris, I think.

Our feet dangle off the side of the roof, and I gently tap my foot on hers. After a few minutes of silence, I lie on my back, and look at the pink and orange clouds above, with the white crescent moon hidden behind them. My dark green, long sleeved shirt crawls up my stomach, revealing the skin above my jeans.

Tris also lies back, but places her head on my chest, and her hand on my bare skin, where my most current tattoo resides.

After our marriage last year, I decided to add another tattoo to my collection: three small ravens across my right hipbone. George Wu, Tori's brother, opened up a tattoo shop after the Release, so I went there. I thought the raven tattoos would symbolize my connection and love for Tris Eaton, and that she is apart of me.

Her fingers trace the three ravens on my lower hipbone, which sends a cool tingle up my body, making the hair on the back of my neck stand.

I place my hands behind my head, which reveals more skin and more of my stomach. I don't mean to reveal skin, but the shirt decides to follow my movement. Tris traces down the line in the center of my stomach, and then places her hand on my chest.

We could try again, she says.

I nod. What is the worst thing that could happen?

Are you ready Tris? Are you sure that you ready for this?

She looks at me and smirks, one that sends more tingles down my spine.

I'm always ready for you, Tobias. I will always be here for you. I love you.

I return the smile and then bend over, bringing my lips onto hers. The kiss is deep, and becomes passionate quickly. This kiss is one that I've never felt before.

The hunger of the kiss. The thirst of the kiss. The urge of the kiss.

The kiss evolves into an urgent wanting, and my lips travel down her neck.

Each kiss was different, each rising higher and higher, sparking a fire as it grew.

She pulls me over her, and somehow my shirt is tossed off the side of the roof.

Bare skin on bare skin. Hands tangled in hands. Lips on lips. Legs under legs.

Tobias, she whispers.

My heart beat rises rapidly.

Tris.

The sun disappears beneath the horizon, and the sky darkens, with the lights of Chicago twinkling in the distance.
