I could've sworn I heard someone moving behind me as I finished my story.
I could've sworn I heard a twig snap in half under the weight of someone's foot.
But as I turned around, no one was there.
And once again, everything was silent, except for the sound of the wind rushing through the trees.
When I faced my friends, they were all staring at me. They were all probably wondering why I had turned towards the forest, but I just shrugged it off. It was probably nothing, anyways.
I pulled my jacket tighter around me, blocking out the cold air. I looked down at Mack. She was shivering as well. In one swift movement, I had her pulled into my lap and my arms wrapped tightly around her. She smiled, causing my heart to melt as it always does when I see her smiling.
I can't get enough of this girl.
Our sixth, and last, bottle of vodka was being passed around the group. And when it got to me, I tilted it back, letting the burning liquid run down my throat. I felt my face scrunch up and Mack smiled again.
God, she makes me go crazy.
Looking back at the group, I took note of what everyone else was doing.
No one had said a word.
Caitlin, who was so skeptical before, was clinging onto Luke, almost as if the wind itself would whisk her away.
Cameron and Ashton hadn't moved an inch, his hand still on her hip. But, every few seconds, Ashton would bend down to plant a quick kiss to her red cheek.
Michael had Kenz's head on his shoulder, and he was slowly rubbing her back. She looked tired, but Michael was trying to keep her awake, knowing that she would have a nightmare if she fell asleep.
I don't think any of us could sleep right now, even if we wanted to.
"What's up Caitlin, getting scared?" Michael taunted from across the fire.
She flicked him off, "Piss off, Clifford."
"Well, if Caitlin is getting scared, maybe we should end the ghost stories he-" Mack started, but was soon interrupted by Luke.
"No way. It's my turn."
Caitlin groaned, letting go of Luke, "I'm cuddling with Mack for this."
"Um, no," Luke said as he pulled her back to him.
I tightened my grip around Mack. It was just a scary story, and I knew that. But something felt off, and I wanted to keep her close to me.
I couldn't get my mind off of the noises I heard behind me as Luke dived into the story.
