Today, I waited.

Today

I heard the fire alarm,

The dull blaring from the hall.

I froze

And I waited.

I waited for the follow up.

I was waiting to hear shots

Or the screams of classmates.

Because that is what I expect now,

Despite the fact that I can't recall

Any school shootings in my state

Yet.

Yet.

I am sixteen and I am scared

Of the last thing I hear being

A fire alarm and gunshots.

I am afraid that people will hear the bell

For third period

As I'm carried out of school

On a stretcher or in a body bag.

So, yes.

I am sixteen.

And

Today, I waited.
