I froze, rather startled by his question.

"I-I don't...there isn't anything to talk about. I don't have anything to say about it...it's a thing of the past," I stammered out uncomfortably. Well done, Lauren, I thought sourly, you're such a great liar. I looked up at him warily, right into his deep, saddened brown eyes as he looked out at the ocean.

"You...just...why were you even there? Were you hurt? D-did someone hurt you? A-are...are you going to tell me what happened to you?" He asked worriedly as he turned around to face me again.

"I'm f-fine...nothing's wrong...I j-just hurt myself, I don't remember what happened," I fibbed as Jake raised his eyebrows. He didn't say a word but his expression told me he clearly didn't believe me at all. "I promise...I don't remember what happened," I added as Jake shrugged. He seemed wise enough to know I didn't want to share so he kept mum, his eyes falling on his lap instead.

"If you need to talk about anything, I'm here to listen, it's not like we're going anywhere any time soon...eat up yeah?" Jake said as he held out another sandwich to me. "Come on, just take it," Jake coaxed as he continued to hold it out to me.

Stop making me eat, I thought irritatedly, I'm already fat enough. I sighed as tears started to prickle in my eyes at the thought of gaining more weight, becoming even fatter...because I totally needed to gain weight.

"A-are you alright? D-did...is the sandwich not good? A-are you feeling alright?" Jake instantly piped up anxiously when I didn't respond. "Christine? Is everything alright?" He prodded again as I nodded stiffly.

"I'm fine, thanks for the sandwich," I said softly as I took another meticulously plastic-wrapped sandwich from him, smiling weakly. I decided to just take it or he'd keep prodding me with questions.

I took another bite, my teeth slowly sinking into the soft wholemeal bread as the taste of ham, fresh tomatoes, cold lettuce and cheese exploded in my mouth. The mix of flavours satisfying my taste buds, leaving me craving for more as I took another gleeful bite. I caught him watching me curiously, suppressing a smile before quickly looking down as I chewed on the sandwich.

How long has it been since I last ate something remotely substantial without making myself vomit it back up? How long has it been since I've even eaten something proper, I wondered as I carefully opened the bottle of juice to take a sip. The sweet taste of the apple juice filling my mouth sent shivers down my spine as I remembered what it felt like to taste something so sweet instead of just drinking plain water all day long.
